Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up]x6 Well, I'm not apathetic towards Miles Morales, but I do hate him with a passion. Does that count?

It probably hasn't reached its final draft yet. Given how large a role Spidey played in the original storyline, I'm sure they had an analog in the movie who can now actually be Spider-Man with minimal changes.

[up]Not like it matters. Pretty sure it's 100% officially confirmed the MCU Spider-Man is Peter.

[up]No you were just really obnoxious about it last time so I felt we didn't need to go down that path again since this thread has a bad history of race based stuff getting out of hand.

[up]I don't think I appreciate that insinuation that my opinion of Miles is based on his race.

I would rather it be Miles just so that we're not dealing with Peter Parker being recast. Again. I like Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker.

[up][up]I didn't say it was. I said discussions about characters like that inevitably take an awkward turn into that area, particularly when people make sure to repeatedly mention how much they hate the black guy.

I don't think that should be too much of a concern, the threat of major public backlash for retracting their only minority and female led films would be huge risk for Marvel to take. That and what would they put in to replace those films at this stage?

Iron Man 12.

[up]He deserved one good Spider-Man movie. Hopefully he lands on his feet.

[up][up]So then you're saying we're not allowed to talk about Miles Morales because he's black and so it might start an argument? And I'm the obnoxious one?

So I just heard:

Spidey is making his way to the MCU. It seems hard to believe truthfully.

I wonder if Marvel and Fox can work out the same deal with the X Men franchise, or if they'll stick with how things are already.

I love Spider-Man, but call me when we can have X-Men characters (who aren't retconned into being Inhumans) in the MCU, then I'll be surprised as all hell.

[up][up][up][up]Not at all. I just suggested we not go down this path again because you have a habit of being rabid about it. And like you said hey it's Peter confirmed so it's irrelevant anyways unless you're just doing it to start drama.

[up][up][up]We don't need spoiler tags I don't think.

I don't particularly mind the lack of X-Men since they work better separate from the rest of the Marvel universe, but I feel like we're missing out on a film adaptation of Onslaught.

I would be shocked if the X-Men show up in the MCU seeing as the X-Men movies are a long-running franchise in their own right. Plus, it would make all those Inhumans-retcons super awkward. They'd have to retcon the retcons, and since the comics seem intent on mimicking the movies, it'd just make Marvel's mythology even more needlessly confusing.

[up][up]I think you're exaggerating my rabidness a bit there. I don't like a fictional character. Get over it. And if there are a bunch of people coming into the thread to say things like "Miles is better, they should use him instead!" why am I not allowed to say the reverse?

comicwriter: If you want the subject dropped, you could always stop responding.

Calnos: While everyone said Spider-Man wouldn't happen, and it just did, I'm going to double-down and say that X-Men still won't happen. Why? Because the X-Men movies do really well. And with First Class, they've entered a bit of a renaissance. Last Stand and Origins sucked, but every other movie is at least good, and a few (X-Men United, First Class) are great.

The comics seem to have handled the discrepancy between how people react to superheroes and how they react to mutant superheroes recently by making the marvel public just enormous assholes to everyone.

Speaking of Inhumans however, what would the chances be of Spidey being an inhuman in line with recent developments? I mean they are rebooting the character and it would differentiate him from previous incarnations.

(Note I'm not personally in favour of this as a retcon, more asking whether it could happen and if it'd work for the more dedicated elements of the fanbase).

I don't think this would have happened had ASM 2 not underperformed. DOFP did surprisingly well so I don't think that train has derailed just yet.

[up][up]My guess is they're just gonna introduce Spider-Man In Media Res and not touch on the origin. Everyone knows Spider-Man's origin and redoing it in The Amazing Spider Man was redundant to begin with.

Also the mutants wouldn't really work in the MCU right now anyway.

The thing they really need back is FF.

I'm gonna go with "no". I don't want every person with superpowers outside of our Super Soldier/Gamma Radiation/Asgardian trinity needs to be an Inhuman, especially since the first season of Agents of SHIELD established that there are people with natural or accident-caused super abilities.

I still don't get how DOFP did well. I watched it and it sucked pretty bad. Except for Quicksilver. Hopefully Marvel's version of Quicksilver is just as good.

[up][up]Agreed, if only for Dr. Doom and Galactus.

[up][up][up]I wonder if it's too late to tie Fox's reboot into the MCU, or at least its sequels?

[up]The reason it did well is (and you might want to make sure you're sitting down before you read this because it's going to be quite a shock)... not everyone has the same opinion as you.

[up][up]It got good reviews so it seemed a lot of people liked it. It also helps that Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender became big stars in between FC and DOFP.
