Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The mechanics of a thousand foot tall celestial bedding a human woman boggle the immature mind.

At the moment I'm wishing for something more interesting.

[up][up]The entire Star Fox team, or just Fox McCloud?

GOTG 2 will be an episode of Maury Povich.

Word of God is that they plan on having it much darker and more serious than Agents of SHIELD but not as dark as something like Spartacus.

So if AOS is normally TV-PG-ish, Daredevil will be TV-14-ish?

Sorry I didn't respond earlier, I was having trouble posting for some reason.

EDIT: Also, something I want to ask, how come Cobie Smulders doesn't show up as Maria Hill in AOS more often? Like is she doing some other project in Real Life or something?

Yes, The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Salary might be a big issue since she was very popular coming off of How I Met Your Mother. They might not be able to afford her in more than occasional guest appearances.

[up][up][up][up][up]Starfox is a very popular candidate. It'd also make Peter Thanos' nephew (AWKWARD). The other really good suggestion I heard was Starhawk, which might fit with the lines about his father being an "angel".

[up][up] Oh yeah, she's showing up there, isn't she?

Shoot.

So how's Season 2 of AOS and Agent Carter? Awesome and awesome, I assume?

[up]Don't do that!!!! Agent Carter could use the ratings, and the show is more than awesome! It's easily my favourite Comic book show!

Ao S has improved greatly in its second season, but it's not fully there yet.

[up][up]I'd wait on Netflix for both though AOS has been improving.

[up][up][up]Agent Carter has been turning out pretty awesome, and the writers have avoided Agents of SHIELD's pitfalls, i.e. ("macguffin of the week", "too many thin characters") and regularly change up the status quo. Not to mention Peggy, Jarvis, and Howard themselves. You could easily watch the current episodes on ABC's site rather than waiting for Netflix.

And you should hurry to do so...the first episode expires in three days. But it is really worth it. And with Peggy still turning up in the movies one way or another, it might be unwise to wait for netflix.

Yeah, seriously, if you have the chance and inclination, watch Agent Carter now rather than later.

[up][up][up][up][up]Question about that. I don't usually watch the new episodes as they air, so would it be better for the show's ratings to watch it on demand instead of DV Ring it?

And if I claim to be a wise man, well, it surely means that I don't know.

According to the show's official site, they do count DVR ratings, so that works fine.

I'm a bit late, but I'm also suspecting that Peter's dad is Starhawk because I can see how he'd be viewed as an angel, and after Yondu, it'd continue a trend of the original/future-set Guardians serving as father figures for Peter.

On the Screen Junkies podcast, when it came to the topic of Al Pacino being considered by Marvel Studios, one of the guys suggested he should play Star-lord's dad. Good idea, or bad idea? It'd certainly be a crazy idea, in a series that likes crazy...

[up][up] If Pacino plays anyone other than Mephisto, I riot.

[up] Eh, not really. He was paid to pick up the guy's son from Earth, but Yondu doesn't have the best opinion of him.

Really? Sorry but the part about Superheroes which don't have sex is pretty much nonsensical. It's simply not the focus of the story, but only mentioned when it actually makes a difference (even though I think that the part of Bruce not being able to sleep with betty is really stupid, even if the idea is from the comics). If the superheroes are not genetically challenged (I shudder to think how sex with the Thing would be like) or stuck in romantic notions from a time long gone, I would assume that they are sexual active. But with whom I certainly don't care, just as much as I don't care what my collegues are up to in their bedrooms. It's simply not important.

Though I ship Black Widow and Falcon.

I honestly have no idea what continuity they're talking about. At one point they talk about the movies, but then they start talking about Spider-Man and how he has "so many" hot girlfriends they can't remember if he marries one of them or not and then they talk about how even if he was married you just assume that he and his wife kiss and go sleep in separate beds.

And I'm pretty sure that's not the case in the Spider-Man comics, at least.
