Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So what was your point, anyway?

[up][up]Zigactly.

Everything boils down to 'Hero punches things.'

You can't lose with a description like that.

I'm sure they'll come of with a decent character arc for Luke. What direction could they take him from the comics?

Well, part of his origin was being framed for a crime he didn't commit. Maybe the show will have a story arc of Luke trying to clear his name?

I'm not sure why anyone would assume there wouldn't be any arc or characterization other than someone making an awkward attempt at a joke.

What does Luke Cage do aside from punching things? That's a honest question, I don't know anything about the character. So...batman is also a millionair and inventor, and he used to be a detective, too, even though the little fact is mostly forgotten nowadays. Daredevil is also a lawyer (and I really hope that the show ends up the first lawyer comic show in history). What makes Luke Cage different from other comic book characters?

[up]I think since he's referred to as a "Hero for Hire", he kinda helps people with their problems and gets paid for it (I think), but your guess is as good as mine. tongue

I admit, first I thought "great, yet another trailer in which everything looks dark, people stare dramatically in the camera and some guy narrates over it". But they got me...I know really want to know what he is about to do.

[up][up]Yessssssssssss! This is gonna be the best!

Also, for added fun, try watching that trailer while bearing in mind this is the same universe as Guardians of the Galaxy. "Daredevil is having an epic confessional with a Catholic priest. Meanwhile, Rocket Raccoon and his pals are flying around outer space having wacky misadventures! Also, Howard the Duck exists. And the Norse gods, too. Okay, the Marvel Universe is weird, you get the idea."

[up]I'm no psychic, but I'm guessing he's about to dress up in a costume and fight crime.

[up][up] He said it himself, he's just trying to make his city a better place.

10 bucks say that's going to be a meme.

[up] Right? I keep thinking of hearing an announcer saying "From the world of The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy".

Holy crap, to quote E-Rod, "Warner Bros, keep Ben Affleck."

Hmm...seems a little generic "grim and gritty" to me. Then again, this is only a teaser trailer, and it's kind of what I'd expect from Daredevil. I'll probably watch it anyway, since it's on Netflix. I just hope that the Netflix series have a little more variety in tone.
