Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

His powers are derived from his confidence; he is as strong as he thinks he is.

That's... interesting.

Can he beat the Hulk that way, as long as he doesn't lose confidence?

I think I can... I think I can...

It's much better than his powers depending on being in Britain though, which that's a replacement for. Bear in mind that he seems to have fairly powerful enemies - reality warpers, vampire armies, the Fury (unkillable assassin android), etc - so that doesn't end up that OP, although I haven't read all of his stuff and it kind of varies by writer.

There is one who's a Spider-man.

Yeah, both GL and Captain Britain pulled this shtick as a replacement for their earlier, shittier drawbacks; Cap's powers being dependent on being in Britain, and GL being vulnerable to the color yellow.

Captain Britain's writers wanted him to be able to leave the country, and Green Lantern's writers got sick of the fact that a hobo in a Hazmat suit could kick his ass.

If they wanted to make him leave the country they could have used Loophole Abuse and said he can operate in any region of the world that used to be a British colony.

For a while his suit let him use his powers outside the country.

As much as I like the character, he's very prone to bad writing and really wouldn't fit in the MCU at this time.

[up][up][up][up]...I think that's literally a quarter of the world's landmass.

Also, he should obviously be able to use his powers out to seas: Britannia Rules The Waves.

Here's another one: he has power in places that weren't under British Rule... as long as it's daytime.

Because the sun never sets on the British Empire.

Not necessarily. Britain does technically own a piece of Antarctica.

As amusing as this is, it would bring the Unfortunate Implications that these regions are, or should be, rightful part of Britain. That is not a idea many would endorse. It would be slightly less bad if you replaced the "used to be a British colony" to "have the Queen as head of state", but that would include just Canada, Australia and a bunch of smaller islands.

Captain Britain is actually captain of the Confederations Cup all-star team.

Captain Britain is Venezuela's most hated superhero.

The Ultimate universe actually had Captains Britain, Spain, France and Italy. As far as I can tell they were just flag-wearing super soldiers with no actual interesting qualities.

Having only seen a little bit of the Capt. Britain Corps, I find it hilariously silly.

I mean, why couldn't it be, like, the Nova Corps? If you're gonna ripoff Green Lantern, at least use the ripoff you already have.
