Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

It's "—All You Zombies—" all over again! Or perhaps some sort of double-Fry.
Are they really doing the Civil War storyline? I mean, I hear it's the stupidest, worst-written, most contested Marvel storyline ever.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.![]()
The comic may of had it's problems, but the basic premise: A movie where established superheroes are fighting each other over a sincere ideological divide (as opposed to a misunderstanding or one side being mind controlled), is a really interesting one.
From my understanding the big problem the comic series had was by the end it became almost impossible to justify the actions of the pro-registration side. The MCU is it's own thing and therefore isn't beholden to follow the comic series in Tony Stark's more controversial actions.

That is far from the truth. For starter, to be the stupidest Marvel storyline ever it would have to beat the Clone Saga, and nothing beat the Clone Saga in a stupidity contest.
Also, a lot of people really liked Civil War. Particularly more casual fans who couldn't spot the most glaring flaws in characterization. Furthermore, the main event itself wasn't that terrible. What really ruined it was all the tie ins that contradicted each other and pretty much ruined the central theme.
And at ay rate, the main problem with the story was execution, not premise. Even among its detractors, a lot of people like the premise itself. So it is nothing weird to adapt it into the movie.
I always thought that this is the big advantage of the MCU: A more streamlined continuity than in the comics. While there are some minor contradictions already, everything just fits together way better. And as a result, the character development is more even. I think the character who made the biggest leaps is Steve. I also think that so far the Captain America Franchise is the strongest because of this. Mostly because the way his story is set-up, there is never the chance to revisit what was before. The Iron Man movies are a little bit formulatic. It's always about Tony messing up, having emotional problems and then pulling himself together just in time to prevent the worst, and there is a new invention of his somewhere along the line. With Captain America, I have no idea in which direction they will go, even with the Civil war subtitle.

That's basically it. The biggest problem is that the entire series was marketed on the premise of being "Fair and balanced" and that either side could be seen as correct, except they had Iron Man and his buddies acting like a bunch of jackbooted fascists who used violence and intimidation to silence anyone who dared speak out against #1 Glorious Leader Tony Stark.
It was basically giving us the Rebel Alliance vs. Emperor Palpatine and the Empire, and then telling us that the Empire's stance is just as valid and defensible as that of the Rebels.
Well, with Black Panther, Crossbones and rumors of Baron Zemo, I think we can expect some twists and turns.

Oh God! Natural light!I'd say One More Day was worse than Clone Saga. The Clone Saga ran long but it only really got really bad when thye kept flip flopping on who was the clone. Also character assassination of Peter to an extent. And some dumb cyber stuff.
And somewhere between Clone Saga and One More Day in terms of dumb would be the Gathering of Five/Final Chapter, where an epic battle between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin destroys New York but its only a crazy insanity dream Norman is having.
And there are tons of stories that are dumber than Civil War, although also less well known.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersConsidering the way they staged the announcement, with Cap and Iron Man fighting over Black Panther, I think it is pretty safe to say that Civil War will be about them clashing. Thus said...I actually believe that "Civil War" will be more about setting Civil War, which will then the theme of the following movies.
Well, that produced quite an odd image.
Oh God! Natural light!Once you go black, you civilly debate Registration with tact.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.![]()
Actually, this
was kind of what I had in mind. Which is which is up for you to decide.
I still find it funny that Civil War was averted on one Earth just because Cap and Stark were married on that world.
