Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] That's X-Men: Apocalypse info. Interesting X-Men info, though.

[up] Blame HYDRA

Anyway, I suppose the jump to them already being a team was obvious given the end of Winter Soldier, but I still think we're necessarily missing out on some character development we should've gotten. Still...

The larger threat individually isolates each of us," said Chris Hemsworth. "It's quite a personal kind of threat, and Thor is potentially seeing the bigger picture here - he has a whole other sort of journey for a while, where he kind of goes 'Hang on, this is part of something else, I think'

This kind of reminds me of that arc in EMH where Thor leaves Midgard for a while, because he realizes Surtur is gaining power. Though I bet in this case it's going to be because he realizes someone is manipulating the situation with the Gems, maybe once he finally gets a good look at the scepter.

It's unsurprising that Black Widow is Whedon's favorite character of the ones he has to work with, though I don't think he really did as great a job with her in Avengers than what they did with her in Winter Soldier. But we'll see.

The idea of Ultron having (for the moment) like minded people to help him express himself through interaction rather than just making monologues all the time is great, so I'm looking forward to how the twins are written. Also, something about a bomb made by Tony - are the twins another example of people wanting revenge on Tony due to something he did before he became a hero?

And once again, Ruffalo shows that he really gets Banner and respects the character, and that needs a whole freaking movie already.

Man, if there's one thing I love about Universal's Marvel "Island", it's not that it's a microcosm of Marvel Comics. It's that it's a microcosm of Marvel Comics.......circa 1994.

Seriously, it's like opening up a 2-decade-old time capsule. It just drips with 90s steel. It's fantastic.

......Not much to say regarding MCU for me. I can see the potential spoilers starting to trickle in and I'm hoping to keep clean of it.

... I really want to go there again.

But the dragons were replaced with similar but more branded dragons. And that hurts. Also, time and money is an issue.

No, no. Turns out that he got hopped up on drugs, attacked New York and then was decapitated by Wolverine. Also, he killed Jean.

I hope they change it back so the Whizzer is their father again. That would just put a cherry on top of this goulash.

I know it's childish, but I can't take someone named "Whizzer" seriously, given a certain trope. tongue

(Yeah, same problem I had with the Wii and Wii U, and I'm not a Nintendo hater.)

[edit] I get that the "whiz" is talking about speed, but comprehension at the gut level is more difficult than at the intellectual level.

As an aside, if anyone ever wants to read about comic stories that were changed(like Magneto being the father of Wanda and Pietro)this is a pretty good place to start.

Eh, I doubt that'll last. Most people are familiar with them as Magneto's children anyway.

I hold a fondness in my heart for the Whizzer and his dozens of heart attacks. He came at a time when Marvel was trying bridge the gap between their golden age and contemporary books. Captain America had returned, Vision turned out to be the Human Torch rebuilt, the Whizzer and Miss America were revealed to be the parents of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.

Two of those things have been undone but Captain America is still returned.

[up] I know this isn't likely to be true but I like to believe that Marvel was just sick of the tumblr posts along the lines of "magneto shows up and instantly beats Ultron"

Lets open a betting pool.

I'll cast a vote for Wolverine. Or Quicksilver going back in time and impregnating his own mom by tapping into the Speed Force finally.

I vote for Coulson as the dad and Peggy Carter as the mom. You know, so it can tie into the movies better.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

Apologize for asking this again, but how will they introduce US Agent into the MCU?

None of us work at Marvel Studios so it's impossible to say if they plan on introducing U.S. Agent at all, much less how they would do it.
