Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I wonder what Steve would think about football. It was around before the war but it didn't get huge until after.

I think general attitudes at the time equated Pro Football to Pro Wrestling. I don't think either was particularly popular in the 1930s.

Fun fact about football in its early days. Since it lacked a lot of the rule adjustments, they used to pick up and throw players over the scrum (?) so they could run for a goal.

To think that Captain America would support the La Li Lu Le Lo!

Now I want to hear Zola start going insane, reading the names of Japanese train stations and demanding scissors. 61!

I have the feeling that the Cap would consider American Football as a pointless exercise in bullying...

To be fair, it is.

To be even more fair, American football is just pointless generally.

And to be fairer, same is true for most sports in general.

I'd love to see some sort of rationale for that because uh...what?

Steve Rodgers is of Irish decent? I honestly had no idea; that nice to know.

My first thought is Brother Voodoo although Marvel would have to be careful with how they portray him.

I think it might be Brother Voodoo as well. A couple of sites have noted they just recently brought him back from the dead and gave him a big part in the most recent Crisis Crossover.

where the hell was Marvel w/ Chiwetel Ejiofor when casting Black Panther???????

I presume the reason why is because they wanted someone younger, since they've yet to do Black Panther's whole movie and thus origin story and what not.

[up][up] Um, you have no idea who they looked at for Panther. Given that he's a rising star, I think it's unlikely that they didn't consider him. Chadwick Boseman happened to be the better choice.

[up] Chill.

[down] Not really. I'm just curious. you're the one who seems to be getting overly defensive on Marvel's behalf.

The odd thing is Boseman is older than Ejiofor, but is just Older Than They Look. Weird how some people's faces turn out.

The MCU needs an ice-themed hero. And fire themed hero. Have them team up with Thor.
