Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Heroes are not limited to people. Animals can be heroes.

I think oversaturation is coming in 2015.

Two superhero movies is oversaturation? I can only wonder what 2018 will be.

Three with the Fantastic Four reboot.

2016 is going to be the big year with 3 X-men movies, 2 MCU movies, and 2 DCCU movies.

Overall though, I think even a dozen superhero movies wouldn't necessarily be oversaturation as long as they are sufficiently different from each other. Marvel at least can do it really well (Guardians of the Galaxy is basically nothing like The Winter Soldier, and that's just between the two movies that came out this year).

Well Deadpool is an action comedy and I imagine by virtue of the subject matter Suicide Squad will probably be more Anti Heroes / Villain Protagonist than the usual superhero movie.

Also yeah all things considered 2015 is getting off pretty light with superhero movies.

But in general people say the genre will burst every year it seems.

I think 2017 will be the true test. Nine movies are scheduled for it.

Of course, that's assuming Fantastic Four gets a sequel and the Spider-Man spinoffs don't get canned. Otherwise we're at six, all of which seem pretty much locked in.

That's uncalled for. Kristen Stewart is far from emotionless. It's just Twilight. Twilight was so bad it dragged otherwise decent actors down with it.

[up]Nice try, but I've actually had the misfortune of watching Snow White and the Huntsmen. She didn't exactly spontaneously morph into an amazing actor.

She was good in Speak, though. You know, that movie where she played an emotionless girl.

I have to agree...I hesitate to judge any of the actors of Twilight, but I have yet to see her sell an emotional scene.
