Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Also, I find it funny as hell that Black Widow's first appearance in the MCU was in Iron Man 2, and now she's been in two Avengers and two Captain America movies. (Granted, Civil War is also going to have Iron Man in it).

I'd say Bucky is a lock for being in Civil War simply because of the ending of The Winter Soldier. I'd also probably put the Vision on the same side as Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver, assuming he appears at all. Assuming they go with the comics origin and have Ultron create the Vision (and I've heard conflicting reports on this, but the sources I'm most familiar with point towards an Ultron origin), then he will have a much stronger bond with the Maximoffs then he will with the other Avengers.
Otherwise your breakdown is probably about as accurate as you can get.
Assuming no casualties (and I have to say, I really don't like Rhodey's odds for surviving Ao U right about now), the only things I would say for certain are:
- Captain America will be backed up by Falcon, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch.
- Iron Man will have on his side the Hulk (gotta keep the Science Bros together, after all), Vision, and War Machine/Iron Patriot.
- Thor will be absent as he'll be off dealing with Ragnarok.
I can't really speak to Ant-Man until his movie comes out, and I'm having a really hard time with Black Widow and Hawkeye.
Buuuuuuuuut if I had to pick... I'd put Hawkeye on Cap's side for the sake of having the whole Kooky Quartet, and Black Widow on Stark's side.
Really, considering they're both SHIELD Agents, it's kind of hard for me not to put them both on Stark's side. Superhuman regulation seems like something they'd both logically be for. And yeah, I know Black Widow is now friendly with Cap, but I think she has enough independence that she'd side against him if she thought he was wrong. Adds another layer of personal drama to the whole thing.
Combination of things. We know most of the main Avengers are safe due to contractual obligations/confirmations from other sources that they'll be in future movies, and killing off the newcomers seems like a waste. Rhodey does not have the same guaranteed contractual immunity.
In addition, despite the fact that we know he's in the film, very little has been said about his role or how he'll factor into the fight, which doesn't bode well at all. Add in the fact that we already know his best friend will be consumed by guilt enough to do a 180 on his government stance... and things do not look good for Colonel James Rhodes.

If Marvel does this Black Dude Dies First BS I will flip shit. We barely have any minority heroes as is. Don't fucking kill the few we've got. I'd prefer it if nobody died.
He's not dying. He's getting a cool motorcycle
◊ as confirmed by the toyline.

Assuming most of the Avengers characters get involved I'm guessing it will go:
edit: Cap might also be trying to recruit Bucky if he manages to find him.
