Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Winter Soldier has been nominated for an Oscar. It's in the Best Visual Effects category.

It's competing with Interstellar, Guardians of the Galaxy, Days of Future Past, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

They did a stellar job on the helicarriers and Falcon's wings.

Also superhero movies are never gonna get nominated until they do what they finally did with animation and just make a separate category like "Best Genre Film" or something along those lines.

Return of the King won, so a Marvel film should be possible without getting it's own category.

I don't think so. Fantasy has a similar problem with the Sci-Fi Ghetto but I think there's still a bit of an issue with people viewing comics as a subliterate form of entertainment. Return of the King is an adaptation of a well regarded novel while something like Winter Soldier is based off (what people view as) some funny books aimed at small children.

The Helicarriers and Falcon were awesome, but I'd say Winter Soldier's crowning visual achievement were the little things like Winter Soldier's arm or old Peggy.

Marvel's actually done little to promote their movies for the Oscars, though. Disney even offered to have a "For Your Consideration" campaign for The Avengers, but Marvel turned them down. So they don't really care about the awards, I expect.

Well, it's a waste of money. I will be very surprised if Big Hero 6 wins best animated movie, too.

End of the day, Marvel makes fun movies that are very enjoyable, make large amounts of money, but aren't heavy in the kind of content that Oscars generally favor. Marvel isn't out to make a point with its movies or change the way you look at something or raise awareness of a serious issue. There's little in the way of deep, extensive philosophical exploration of its themes; even when it has a serious theme like Winter Soldier did, it still plays it in a fairly simplistic way - the matter of Freedom v. Security was undercut when it turned out that Security was being championed by literal Nazis, allowing the conflict to be resolved by Captain America punching folk without ever really addressing the original question.

Marvel movies are lacking in Oscar Bait material. It's no surprise that they are rarely if ever nominated, and that's not a judgment on their quality at all.

I wouldn't. BH 6 will likely get some leeway by virtue of being a children's movie, so the subject matter isn't going to be as looked down upon. Hell it got nominated at all unlike every other superhero movie this year (other than effects categories).

[up]This year in animation was better than the last, but most of the movies were more decent than really good. Otherwise Boxtrolls wouldn't be on the list. They kind of had to nominate Big Hero 6 and The Lego movie, but I have the feeling that the other two entries have a better chance of actually winning, though the Lego movie might snatch it for the nostalgia factor.

..Didn't Big Hero 6 already win the Golden Globe for best animated picture?

Nope. It was How To Train Your Dragon 2.

That would be true if The LEGO Movie had been nominated...

[up]Right...it was on the short list, but was actually edged out (I am kind of glad for it, too be honest). Correction: Song of the Sea might have a shot even though it's not an american production.

Yeah!!!!!!!!!! I was hoping for this! (And now the number of Avengers which could die in Age of Ultron is down to one....Hawkeye always gets the short stick, right?)

If they are keeping it like his latest(?) comic death he's going to do a stupid sacrifice due to Wanda(now that I think about it Scott Lang, Vision and Ultron were in that story)

I can't see that making it into the movie. I don't think they're gonna make Scarlet Witch kill Hawkeye this early on.

It bears repeating that we don't know anyone is going to die and that Joss Whedon himself said that's extremely unlikely. This isn't Firefly or Buffy or Agents of SHIELD where he's killing off a bunch of characters created for the show this is him potentially killing off corporate properties that Marvel and Disney are invested in pimping and merchandising.

Me neither.

How many times have the movie!Avengers actually died during the comics? Scott and Vision died in the same story as Clint and Thor died fighting Cul but those are the only ones I can remember.

Captain America has died at least once and then got better (Civil War). Hawkeye, Scott Lang, and Vision all died and got better (Avengers Disassembled). Iron Man died and got...replaced by a younger version of himself but then may or may not have been restored by Heroes Reborn? (The Crossing, comics are stupid). And then Thor died in Raganarok but was brought back in the Thor: Reborn storyline.

...I dunno if Doctor Strange ever died but I don't think that counts.

Also if you ever worry about jumping to rash conclusions, the Business Times just published an article claiming that the presence of a gurney and surgical equipment in the AOU trailer means that Benedict Cumberbatch will be making a surprise cameo in the movie as Stephen Strange.

What? Never mind that this is a leap I don't really follow, BC is currently busy with the Sherlock Special and then will then be on stage, while also shooting Dr. Strange at one point - I really don't see when exactly they had the time in the last month to squeeze in time to shoot a late scene for Ao U (and wasn't the shooting for that wrapped up before BC was announced?).

You're missing the joke I think. It's the fact that they're reaching so heavily for a story that they're saying "Whoa there's a hospital in this movie that must mean Doctor Strange is in it!" which is kind of a ludicrous assumption IMO.

[up]I just wonder how anyone with a brain can make such a leap. Most of the rumors, like Spider-man turning up at one point or dawn of Justice getting split are at least possible, if unlikely. But this one is pretty far out.

Well the Avengers had the Shwarama scene at the last minute. I mean Chris Evans was wearing prosthetic chin to hide the beard he grew for a role he was filming for at the time and Chris Hemsworth spent the entire time trying not to crack up at him.

Point is, last minute things can happen all the time.

So I wonder how the rosters will shake out in Civil War.
