Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Because trying to out hulk the hulk with tech makes him pointless. Why have the huok on the team and not a dude in hulkbuster armour?

Hulkbuster (any x buster armour really) is a sign of tony's hubris. He thinks he can out tech anyone and he really can't. Or shouldn't anyway.

Sure you also hated when he lost to Thanos

Because Hulk losing against one of the strongest beings in the universe is "pathetic"

People take "Hulk is the strongest there is" too literally.

When Bruce couldn't Hulk out, he used a Hulkbuster armor.

[up][up]Nice strawman. That's not an argument I made and doesn't address the argument I did make.

I didn't say Hulk should be unbeatable. I say hulkbuster shouldn't beat him.

If Hulk buster had no chance against Hulk, then what use is the armor for?

The MCU Hulkbuster is literally the only version of the Hulkbuster that has ever beaten the Hulk, I think it's fine to give Tony the win here. Especially since this variant of the Hulkbuster was made with Bruce's help.

I think Hulkbuster winning is fine, but it shouldn't do it through simply matching Hulk on strength. That does make Hulk feel somewhat redundant, like Superman being faster than the Flash. It should have to use loads of tricks and gadgets and only win if Stark plays it smart.

What were the comics hulkbusters that failled to take down hulk for?

Tony can build armor he thinks can take down Hulk (or Thor) but that's hubris and it turns out they're a lot harder to take down than he thinks.

Which Tony did to be fair, he had to drop an entire building on Hulk.

Bruce explicitly helped build the Hulkbuster. Talking like it's all Tony, and therefore somehow a slight against the Hulk, is just wrong. And it was still a fight Tony barely won. Also, Hulk had some Scarlet Witch Madness going on, so you could say he's not fighting at peak.

People cheer for Batman beating up the entire justice league with the Batjusticepuncher Armor but boo Tony for one of his buster armors being worth the billions he spends on them

Poor Tony

[up]x4 I'm saying Tony just for simplicity's sake, Bruce's involvement doesn't change the point, significantly. Attempts to artificially control the hulk should be doomed to failure. (Do not bring up Professor Hulk that's bruce accepting hulk not controlling him)

[up]x5 it's a lot closer to strength to strength than I'd like Tony has some gimmicks but he wins basically by beating up hulk and applying more force than he can take. If he'd used some kind of gamma draining thing or hulk antidote or just successfully lured him out of the city to calm him down it would seem more reasonable.

But he straight up punches him in the face and wins. Ugh. But as I said originally It's in part because MCU Hulk is not getting angrier and stronger as tbe fight goes on the way comics hulk would, which sort of explains why people can win long fights with him.

Eta: [up]x3 i realise you are joking but i've never said anything like that. for all frank miller's faults. Dkr does it right. It takes all the possible tricks and exploits for batman to even think about facing a weaken superman and he only wins because of the kryptonite factor. And only because supes is going hella easy on him.

Hilariously Tony recently used a Celestial Armor to take down Hulk but Hulk basically totals it by activating a gamma detonation.

Keep in mind the armor I think did have gamma absorbing mechanics but Hulk overloaded it.

Yup. In the comics, Tony's buster armors always fail at busting anything.

Besides Bruce being suicidal and the "I'm always angry line" anyway. But both are vague.

Not just vague, they predate the events we're talking about which changed him and his situation quite a lot. Bruce has been through quite a lot and I actually quite like the notion that he's in recovery and it's actually working.

Regardless, just counting raw power, Hulk would be in the top 3 alongside Carol and Thor.

Scarlet Witch, Strange, and Wong don't have as much raw power, but they make up for it with magic and Hax.

Looks like Ryan Reynolds has started training to squeeze his ass back into some certain red spandex for a certain R-rated MCU movie!

Finally some good news today!

I wonder if the post-credits of the second movie will be treated as canon.
