Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

That would be the Angela: Queen of Hel series by Marguerite Bennett
Angela faces off against a revived Bor, father of Odin and her grandfather but apparently the comic runs on a very lemony narrator by Sera, an Angel a race of psychopath capitalists who make it a cultural thing to spread the worst slander about anyone they dislike.
So Bor an Asgardian they hate says this.....
Bor: "What whorespawn slattern is this? Depraved whelp that slithered from the legs of [NOPE, TOO GROSS, SORRY] . [A LOT OF MISOGYNIST FILTH] [RED PILL M.R.A. MENINIST CASUAL RACISM] [UNSOLICITED OPINIONS ON ISRAEL???]"

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."They kinda do a thing where whenever Bor shows up he is written to be a sexist neanderthal.
Cause ya know Vikings are old and old things are sexist, thats the hilt of the joke.
Angela does fall under the Thor franchise banner. Funnily enough Angela is generally well received as a character but her inclusion into Thor's mythology as his long-lost sister has been received very coldly by Thor fans.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
I doubt they'll bring Angela into the MCU, not just because of the prominent lesbianism, but also because the angels of Heven, even if they aren't angels of Heaven with an A, are a good way to get box office bombed by the Bible Belt.
I also wonder if Bor is a misogynist in the MCU. If so, he probably would be very salty about the fact that Asgard's greatest and most powerful warrior was his granddaughter.
MCU Asgard seems to be more egalitarian than the mythical version (the Valkyries are promoted to full warriors as opposed to just escorting the fallen) but on the other hand Sif in the first movie alludes to having dealt with sexist expectations before she took on a battle career, so who knows where it was before Odin.
The irony is that Viking society was apparently pretty egalitarian and the women enjoyed a good deal of freedom and power in their communities.
So its a bit more of a nuanced case there.

Bor has only made an appearance during the prologue of Dark World and no joke was made about him being sexist with the main focus being him defeating the Dark Elves.
The Thor: Tales of Asgard prequel did the opposite by making the Valkyrie queen a huge misandrist, (possibly as a dig at DC's Amazon's) who tried to shame Sif into hating men as well and accused Thor and Loki, who were children, of being spies of Odin when they wandered into her realm.
Aside from everything wrong with assuming one made their publicity known children spies, because of how counterproductive that would, in fact, be. Its funny that mishandled portrayals of intergender relations has been a issue with Thor stories in the past.
Also is Male Feminism a trope, because it sounds like it should be?

I 'd really like to see Thor team up with his fellow hammer wielders for a animated film or something. They could call themselves; The Worthy. Consisting of:
- Thor
- Beta-Ray Bill
- Jane Foster (As Thunderstrike because that is a cool distinct name and the trademark thing is ridiculous)

I do wish Marvel still did direct-to-video animated films like DC does, it'd provide some variety from the current pattern of "everything we produce has to be MCU-related".
Heck, my dream JLA/Avengers adaptation wouldn't even be a live-action film, but an animated one crossing over the DCAU and Avengers: EMH.
I love the MCU, but c'mon, even DC has two movies explicitly outside their shared universe's continuity for experimentation.

Yeah the guy from 2099. He could still use it, he'll just have to wait a bit.
Honestly to me, "Thunderstrike" just sounds like it would work way better as a hereditary title for those mortals worthy of Thor's power then the guys actual name.

I concur. Ever since the MCU made it big even the comics have become overshadowed by it. Even Backported Development'ing stuff from the films onto their comic incarnations. We need more stand alone Marvel media, besides just, very awesome, video games.

Whedon Feminism? It has a good ring to it. Superficial, performative public displays while being a shit-ass person who is all talk in private.
And I wouldn't mind at least a few alternate universe movies other than Into the Spider-Verse that will never connect to the mainline MCU - maybe 2099, Noir, or 1602? I'm not going to count Age of Apocalypse because that absolutely should be part of the MCU.

What I really find a pity is the absence of strong Marvel animated series. Comics, as a serial medium, tend to translate best in serial form (see the MCU itself being serialized movies), and animated series accomodate well the stylistics of comics. The medium loses a lot if it's segregated to just movies.

We are going to be getting a brief revival of X-Men: The Animated Series in X-Men 97, maybe that might spark new interest in animated shows?

Ever since I’ve read Hawkeye (2012) I’ve felt that the adaptation it deserves should be a Spider-Verse-esque animated film.

We did have cartoons but they weren't particularly good.
Avengers Assemble and Guardians of the Galaxy were basically MCU shill pieces while Hulk Agents of Smash and Marvel's Spider-Man were plainly just not that good
Plus apparently Marvel Studios had a lot of production problems explaining the general poor quality of the shows animation.
Man that would be dope, especially how they handle the archery visual effects.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Well, in terms of strong Marvel animated series, we did have Earth's Mightiest Heroes... which was canceled for not selling enough toys/so Avengers Assemble could happen instead.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonThe loss of EMH hurts, nearly ten years later.
Ultimate Spiderman did actually somewhat grow the beard, but even at its best it wasn't a particularly great show. Just average.
I agree that Marvel has been way too centered on MCU style shows since The Avengers (2012).
It'd be nice to see an end to that.
Edit:
Oof. You would bring up that one. That's two Fandom lost lenores.
Only Young Justice comes back it seems.
All we can do is remember the good times and try to move on.....while secretly holding on to frothing bitterness.

One Strip! One Strip!

Is this the same one that gave us "Unsolicited opinions on Israel" or is that a different series?
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
