Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I have not, but the name "Doom" comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "dun", which means hill. It described people living on a downward slope. Similar names include Downe, Dounne, or Downer.
This is distinctly separate from the word "doom", which evolved from the Olde English "domen", which means to pass judgment.
In-universe, it really is pure coincidence that Dr. Downwards Slope's name happens to be a homonym for dire judgment. It shouldn't by itself be taken as indicative of anything, any moreso than Tony "Unyielding Perfection" Stark should be worshipped as a flawless icon of a man.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I think that Dr. Doom could work well in this banter-rich universe. Witty villains are very good, which I think is why Loki lasts so long as a villain.
Sincerely S Awatching.Just gotta make sure he's written well. People like it when Doom has an eloquent Shakespearean prose to his hammy scenery-chewing. And lo, it shall be that the Avengers meet their fate, and all the world shall belong to DOOM!
Remember that time Bendis tried to write Doom, and he had the guy just flat-out call Carol Danvers a fat cow? Fans rioted.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. It’s a shame that Bendis doesn’t have more than one style of writing
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIf John Krasinski comes back for the 199999 Reednote , then Rainn Wilson should play Doom.

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonI can't help but wonder if giving the MCU a better number would have made the film teams more willing to accept it. 616 rolls off the tongue, but Earth-1999999 sucks.
"In the vast multiverse, every universe is known by a designation. We call your universe one nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine." "You have to listen to me. You're all in danger. The Wanda of Earth 999999919999 is going to come here and attack you." "It's fine, we're safe here. We're more interested in you, Dr. Strange of Earth ninety nine nines of nine nines nining nines."
It's a completely obnoxious number to try and use in dialogue.

I think I suggested this on another thread/page way back, but even just calling the MCU "199" would've been good for brevity.
Thor was another character that talked like that, but that ship's sailed. Shame. Imagine long-winded Thor facing off with Doom.
- Thor: Thine wicked plots end now, foul villain! Thou conspirest with mine brother most foul, but to no vile ends shall this wicked plot avail you!
- Doom: A misunderstanding most grave hast been committed upon Doom. In Latveria didst your brother seek refuge, and indeed a wicked plan Doom did hatch. But t'is no conspiracy, simpleton. A prisoner in Doom's arcane cells, is where your treacherous brother may now be found.
- Thor: Monster! Unhand mine brother and stand down from your plots most foul! Treacherous though he may be, mine brother he remains!
- Doom: Killed thirty-seven Latverian subjects overnight, he did.
- Thor: ...lo, adopted he be.
- Doom: Foul cur! Disrespect the sanctity of family at thine own peril! Take thine tongue so tipped with acid and BEGONE FROM CASTLE DOOM, lest it be cut from your very mouth!
- Thor: Hark, when didst I become yon bad guy here?
And now it's time for the Thor: Smack Talker
link.
Because yeah, it's a shame we missed out on Shakesperean Thor.
I like this current Thor, but man, we missed some good classy shit talking out of him.
One Strip! One Strip! They already used a perfect response from Tony.
"Hey, Shakespeare in the Park! Dost mother know you weareth her drapes?"
The MCU has a couple of characters irreverent enough to say something like this to Doom's face right now, but I'm not sure what they would say without just rehashing this joke.

Have you ever asked the origin of the family name?
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"
