Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Have those people not seen Multiverse of Madness? Or Moon Knight?

Multiverse of Madness actually got praise for Raimi's flourishes giving it a slightly different style than other MCU films.

I wonder how Robert Rodriguez would do as an MCU director. I could see him making an absolutely batshit insane Ghost Rider film or Sleepwalker or Darkhawk series.

Eh. Considering how mediocre Book of Boba Fett was, I'm not too sure if Robert Rodriguez would be a good fit for a Marvel project.

I liked The Hard Goodbye and the action parts of From Dusk Till Dawn tho.

He merits something that actually lets him go all out. Book of Boba hit a weird reverse balance where it was neither outstanding nor safe enough. Exemplified by the Mods and how their designs were complained about as too much for Tatooine but by Rodriguez vehicle standards they’re pretty tame.

I'm definitely envisioning more of a grindhouse-y From Dusk Till Dawn meets Planet Terror vibe here. Johnny Blaze (Lakeith Stanfield), Roxanne Simpson (Jessica Alba), Mephisto (Antonio Banderas), and Scarecrow (Javier Botet) would make up the original, and then future installments would involve Danny Ketch (Pedro Pascal), Robbie Reyes (Gabriel Luna reprising), Ilyana Rasputin (Samara Weaving), Belasco (Jason Isaacs), and Zadkiel (Evan Jonigkeit).

Rodriguez is hit or miss as a director as far as I'm concerned. His best films were largely in the 1990's (El Mariachi, Desperado, From Dusk 'Til Dawn).

Personally I'd like to see George Miller direct a Ghost Rider film in full Mad Max mode. He did nearly have experience with superhero movies before (he was attached to the Justice League movie that never happened).

Rodriguez is inconsistent, but with a premise like this and Feige overseeing it, I think he'd be great. I'd pick Miller for an Age of Apocalypse or Skaar/Daken movie though.

I will go to bat for the first two Spy Kids movies as good. The third is occasionally interesting but the 3D was a pain and I didn’t see the fourth.

I only ever saw the third Spy Kids flick, and I hated it so much it made me completely disinterested in the rest of the franchise.

Robert Rodriguez's episode on The Mandalorian was perfectly fine, so I don't think Book of Boba Fett being bad is Rodriguez's fault so much as something else.

As far as other Rodriguez collaborators go, I'd hold off on Danny Trejo for this, but I kinda envision him as Ch'od in Starjammers. Elijah Wood I'd like to see as Owl Jr. in Daredevil (who was originally confirmed to be a future villain), and Cheech Marin could basically just be a tamer version of Chet Pussy, probably as a ringmaster or emcee at Johnny Blaze's circus. I'd save Alexa Vega for Angela del Toro, depending on what they do with Hector Ayala.

Yeah, some pretty good TV directors have gone into the Star Wars D+ franchise and churned out mediocre work, so I don't think Rodriguez is to blame for that.

You can only do so much to counteract a bad script.

I guess having a Jewish actor play a Nazi is a fairly common thing to do.

And I'm still waiting for another good MCU villain. I've heard Gorr is good, but I really didn't like the tone of Ragnarok (I think I'm just not a fan of Watiti in general)

Uhhhhhh now that Gorr's done I think the only other upcoming villain to look forward to is Kang.

And I guess maybe Adam Warlock in Guardians 3.

I have high hopes for Namor (who technically isn't always a villain, but if he's anywhere near as much of a piece of shit as he is in the comics, he may as well be). No clue who the villain in The Marvels will be, but I sincerely hope it's Deathbird and D'Ken.

Robert Rodriguez would be a kickass Ghost Rider director. Either him or, funny enough, Rob Zombie.

The legend has returned.

Zombie feels like a Great Value Rodriguez half the time, though I wouldn't mind seeing him take a crack at Daimon Hellstrom or Jennifer Kale/Man-Thing. I do envision Black Sunshine, Electric Head Pt. 1, or El Phantasmo and the Chicken Run Blast-o-Rama being a great opening song for a Ghost Rider movie, especially if it's an 80s or 90s period piece and they really want to do up the trashy, sleazy grindhouse feel.
