Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I would love for them to have a good Scott who doesn't get cucked by Jean.

I would also like a Jean who doesn't cheat on her romantic partner with the hairy smelly man for no reason.

They might want to somewhat differentiate themselves from the Foxmen, so putting Logan on the back burner could work

I doubt that. He's one of the most popular Marvel characters after all.

They could debut him separately though. In a movie with the Hulk for example.

Did that happen in the main comics? I know it was a love triangle but Jean was mostly with Scott when she wasn’t dead

Scott was the one who cheated on her

Of course they’re implied to be doing three ways now

I'd like Jean without THE PHONEX ruining everything.

Mainline Jean has never had any romantic interest in Wolverine whatsoever.

It was a "triangle" mainly because of Wolverine being a dick.

Its more what happened in the Foxmen as Logan grew bizarrely obsessed with Jean to the point of being haunted by figments of her imagination during The Wolverine movie.

It was pretty pathetic.

Kitty, Kurt, and Betsy should come first via Excalibur.

They could utilize Logan but have him be more associated with the Avengers group of characters for a while rather than the X-Men. Comics Logan is basically both an X-Men and Avengers character, so he does take breaks from being around one team to be around another at times.

Or they could link him to Alpha Flight.

He was going to be the leader of that particular team before he left Department H to join the X-Men instead.

Wolverine hasn't been a member of the Mainline Avengers for a pretty long time now, thankfully.

He never really fit into there.

He's there because they needed a "killer" despite several of the Avengers not really having that issue.

I prefer to believe that the real reason so many teams ask Wolverine to join? Whenever you face a new enemy, you can't be sure just how dangerous its attacks will be. So you get this one guy who can't die, and throw him at it first. How mangled he is afterwards tells you how seriously to take the threat.

I like that. I've wanted an Alpha Flight adaptation for ages.

Logan is introduced in Alpha Flight, then gets a solo Weapon X movie with Creed, then joins the X-Men while Creed stays a solo mercenary/Klaus Kinski character with superpowers.

He never really fit into there.

That's not exactly true. He worked well with the New Avengers line up, it included members he frequently teamed up with anyway.

And Wolverine has been with an Avengers group in recent years, the Savage Avengers.

I also kinda feel like Daken should be introduced separate from Logan and start out just searching for his father so he can kill him, possibly partnering with Skaar over his own desire to kill Hulk.

I honestly prefer that to that dumb "Hurr durr, Hulk totally calculates where every single debris hits so literally nobody gets killed." explanation, that thankfully not every writer follows.

[up]

Except every Hulk writer does follow that rule, that the childlike Savage Hulk doesn't intentionally kill anyone.

It just varies with the other alters.
