Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Huh so it turns out Drax’s dumbness here may be attributed to his 90’s characterization which due to a botched resurrection had as a dim witted brute with a childish temper…… basically a Space Hulk.
Before that since his creation in the 70’s he was a fairly intelligent character and then in 2006 the Annihilation era retooled him back to being intelligent via once again dying and then being resurrected this time with all his mental facilities regained.
So stupid Drax is quite the specific phase for the character. Presumably it was picked so he could be the teams Hulk so to speak.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Drax being stupid is Flanderization. In the first GotG he's reckless and Literal-Minded, but not an idiot. He only goes full dumbass from Vol. 2 onward.
regulation pigeonComparatively Annhilation era Drax is actually quite calculating, being willing to bide his time until the right moment to strike.
He aligned himself with Rixhard Rider and co, waiting for the perfect opportunuty to find Thanos and when he found it he snagged it without a moment's hestiation, hising it well enough that only Cammi really noticed his intentions.
By comparison, Movie Drax is very much more of a hot-headed brute.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I rewatched both Guardians of the Galaxy movies about a week ago, and yeah, Drax didn't exactly get stupider but was framed in a more comedic way. Funnily enough though, I feel Drax had more moments of rashness and literal mindedness in the first movie with the literal thinking becoming more like bluntness. But that was balanced by him having more weight in the first movie's story. He is still important in the second movie, but a lot less focus is placed on him since he wasn't as relevant to the themes of the movie as the others were.
Don't catch you slippin' now.Drax is less of an idiot in the second movie since he still remembers how badly his rash idiocy backfired in the first movie. He's more laid back and comedic as a result. Though Mantis' breakdown upon reading his emotions makes it very clear that his pain over the deaths of his family is still there. He has just learned to make peace with it.
It's telling that Drax becoming a sillier character is a positive change for him.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIn the first GOTG, the "doesn't understand metaphors" thing let Drax have a lot of comedic Team Dumb Guy moments, without necessarily being dumb. 'Cause the idea wasn't that he was too dumb to understand metaphors, but that his species has no concept of metaphors, so it's really more of a culture clash thing.
They mostly dropped the extreme literalness after the first movie, which leaves Drax's Team Dumb Guy moments coming from what seems to be actual stupidity (like insisting no one can see him, even as he stands right in front of them eating a chip).
Remember the jokes/memes about why didn't the Avengers have Scott Lang shrink down and go up Thanos's butt and expand?
Well Disney kinda addressed that question.
Through their cruise liners.
The Boys (2019) references this indirectly with the use of knock-off characters. Ant-Man 3 could reference this, but it might be a small drawn Easter Egg like how a homeless man drew Sanic in Sonic The Hedgehog.
Amazing news, a character from Black Panther 2 has been given a poster that proves a lot of rumors.
Sincerely S Awatching.I hear there based on Mesoamerican. Knowing this now I am even more sad about Chadwick's passing. It would have been so epic just to see the Black Panther go up against Namor.
