Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

There's also that infamous Hulk scene where he beat the shit out of Loki.

Which I honestly really enjoyed, as I remember thinking when I first saw Loki beginning to monologue: "Why doesn't Hulk just start attacking mid-speech? It would be totally awe-oh shit it's actually happening!"

And honestly, "Hulk is the strongest there is", is a phrase that many writers and fans take too literally.

It is his main power and other heroes are supposed to find him intimidating, so it's not supposed to be an empty boast either.

Ridiculous strength has always been part of the character.

On that note, cannot believe that the first Avengers flick is already over 10 years old.

Man, I still remember how otherworldly the hype back then was. Something like that had NEVER been seen before.

I'm just glad that MCU decided not to get silly with the Hulk's strength.

It's less that and more that they couldn't do more films that focused on the Hulk.

Sometimes, I just feel like several writers simply use the character as their platform to concoct Beyond the Impossible feat contests or to beat up other characters they dislike.

That feels like an exaggeration, that certainly hasn't been the case with writers like Bill Mantlo, Peter David,Greg Pak or Al Ewing. I don't know which writers you are referring to.

[up][up] That camera arc around the Avengers when they've fully assembled is still one of my absolute favorite scenes in movie history just for how amazingly hype it was at the time.

It really made the scene and it's now one of the most iconic scenes from the film and gets referenced a lot.

[up][up][up] Wasn't the Red Hulk by Jeph Loeb basically like that?

Ross kicking everyone's asses like Silver Surfer and even beating Thor with his own hammer?

But that was to hype up Red Hulk, not to make Banner's Hulk look good.

Red Hulk was only interesting when other writers like Jeff Parker got a hold of him. Parker also had Thor and Uatu get even with Ross.

For Banner's Hulk you also have World War Hulk, which had him wreck a sizeable amount of superheroes.

Honestly WWH was pretty lame. Both the story and the Artwork was infinitely inferior to the great Planet Hulk.

WWH would need a good deal of set-up, both to jack Hulk's power up a notch and justify him becoming the omega dreaded of the superhero community.

Plus as said there's not that many superheroes in the MCU. The only high tier ones are Captain Marvel, Thor, and Doctor Strange.

As far as Hulk goes I can't remember them using Hulk's catchphrases beyond 'smash'.

There's a particular moment when Abomination in calls him "Banner" in The Incredible Hulk when it seemed perfect set up for "Banner is Puny. Hulk is the strongest there is" as pre asskicking oneliner.

But Hulk is the strongest there is and the whole concept of Angrier = Stronger doesn't seem to be used.

I am probably one of the few people who prefers a Hulk who can speak coherently. Hulk Speak is just so utterly overused and annoying to me at this point.

The Hulk in EMH was one of my favorite versions of the character.

EMH Hulk seemed to be a more low key, less fused take on Professor Hulk

Hulk and Bruce working together. A Hulk who is a lot smarter than people assume and is able to drop some dope science facts. Still pretty angry and prone to hair temper but more grumpy than rage monster at his default state.

[up][up] Well several of the Hulks can speak coherently. Joe Fixit is famously talkative and articulate.

Hulk Speak is basically just Savage's thing now because he's the little kid of the Hulks.

It wasnt until Thor Ragnarok that Hulk really spoke at all, prior he had so few lines that you couldnt even tell weather or not he was using Hulk speak.

[up]Now I'm suddenly picturing the various Hulk and Moon Knight personas bickering ans joking like Team Four Star's version of Piccolo, Kami and Nail.

Wait, didn't the Hulk's transformations originally happen during a full moon? Maybe fusing with Moon Knight is a lot more fitting.

Yea I get not wanting the power levels to go out of controll but Im kinda struggeling to recal when MCU Hulk did anything remotely impressive compared to other powerfull MCU characters.

He took out a Chitauri Leviathan with one punch.
