Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Dr. Strange calling himself a superhero makes a lot more sense than Jedi or wizards form Harry Potter because those settings don't have superheroes. Strange grew up in a world that apparently has fictional superheroes, like Superman, and a world that has used the term super-soldier since at least the 1940s.
Plus, Strange is from NYC, where most MCU superheroing happens.

Superman gets referenced by name in Eternals, so that's probably correct.
Yeah I try to avoid pre-release information as much as possible but I was shocked when i looked up releases this year and saw it was coming.
I can't help but think it's going to really struggle with the lack of the titular character. Especially since they destroyed the herb that creates the titular character in the last movie as well.
Plus Letitia Wright got them some really bad press at one point but that seems to have died down again.
Hell at least one leak I read says Namor and Doctor Doom are gonna show up
And the crazy thing is, I can believe it. Its completely possible they are putting in a bunch of crazy shit in the movie to distract from T'Challa not being there.
The wait is gonna be crazy.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I've been hearing that leak, and I really, really hope it's not true.
Mostly because I really, really want Black Panther 2 to actually be about Black Panther's setting and characters.
But then, most of the stuff I've really, really hoped Marvel wouldn't do in the last couple years they did anyway, and they've already shown they're not unwilling to cast characters to star in movies that have zilch to do with them overall, so meh.

I was on a BP thread and there were some posts talking about it
So it was a random find
All things considered, the most likely thing I can see happening is Shuri developing a lot of Black Panther suits for people to use. Cause if THE Black Panther can't show up then they'll do the whole "everyone can wear the mask" thing so a bunch of Black Panthers can show up.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Same, Disney's obsession with not letting films get spoiled or leak is actively detrimental to moviemaking. If it's a good spoiler? Gets me hyped. If it's a bad one? At least I have time to let the initial disappointment wash over, and if the execution (aka the thing that matters the most and the main reason to even see a movie) is good, then it's not really an issue.
I think that some surprises ought to be kept secret in order to be their most effective, but the majority of blockbusters have pretty predictable plots so there isn’t much reason to hide. Remember all the secrecy in the advertising of The Force Awakens, and then upon watching the movie it takes five minutes to realize it’s basically remaking A New Hope?
Often I want to know as little as possible going in (a combination of liking surprises and the fact that I find that if I've heard what's going to happen in advance I find myself anticipating that instead of enjoying the movie/show/book in the moment), but I think it's also valid to enjoy leaks/spoilers and think that extreme spoiler-phobic culture is getting really out of hand.
Like, if I look at the trope page of a work before catching up on it - which I do sometimes because I'm not a super patient person - I know that I risk getting spoiled for upcoming plot points; same with going on certain areas of social media after major releases, it doesn't make sense to get upset about it. Not that anyone here is saying that, I've just seen too many people over the years blow spoilers way out of proportion.
Plus, 95% of the time the impact of a story shouldn't rely solely on the plot being unspoiled? For example, apparently the writers for Westworld changed some plot points after fans figured out what was going to happen, leading to a resolution that didn't make as much sense and wasn't emotionally satisfying.
That being said, if the entire film industry could stop going way too far into the plot of movies in trailers, I think everyone would really appreciate it... this is not a side dig at Terminator Genisys specifically, but that movie is probably the most egregious example of the trailer spoiling a major twist that I've ever seen.
Edit:
What's funny about TFA is that I remember that a blog called Making Star Wars sussed out most of the major plot points of the movie about a year in advance, just through collecting leaks and by spying on sets.

This really wouldn't be an issue if yeah they weren't so extremally secretive about the movie.
Like we don't have the barest idea over what Wakanda Forever is about. Not even a simple one sentence over the potential threat of the movie, just nothing.
Its hard to build up hype when you're given nothing to be hyped for or speculate about. If say Eternity appears in the movie then alright confirm it, because thats at least something tangible to be interested in.
Holy fuck that bit about Westworld. Trying to be subversive I see.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."To use the recent MCU example of Moon Knight, I was able to predict the show's biggest plot twist to all but one word through a combination of mediumhanded foreshadowing and my incidental familiarity with another work that used an extremely similar plotline (enough so that other fans jokingly called the show a Xenogears ripoff). But whether I knew it in advance or not didn't change the impact of actually watching the events play out onscreen, and if anything it actually gave me real incentive to watch it more than once to look for any other background details and other experiential aspects I might've missed the first time around. That's how basic storytelling should work. It contextualizes a lot of things in a neat way but knowing it in advance doesn't render the previous episodes worth less.
An effective twist enhances the work but should not be necessary for it and the non-twist part should still stand on its own legs, otherwise it's just shock value.

I refuse to click any of the spoilered out text, so I'm gonna be in the dark about this supposed leak. But I'll admit I'm very afraid for Wakanda Forever.
I absolutely loved the first film, and I was certain that this second film was going to have it in the bag. But now with literally everything going wrong for it, and the complicated issue of T'Challa himself, I feel like the odds are really stacked against this film.
I really hope this isn't a disaster of a movie, because Black Panther had so much promise, and to see the franchise potentially collapse because of shit beyond its control is so unfair I can't even put it into words.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."The first Black Panther had a strong enough side cast that I'm OK with the increased focus on them, but I would've really liked to see T'Challa step into his own as The Chessmaster. And also one of my favorites was Shuri, but her scenes are going to be a lot more uncomfortable now.
On that note Quantumania also has Kang to be excited for.
Plus She-Hulk has Titania and is bringing back Abomination.
And thats..... yeah I think thats all the upcoming villains we know of. Granted I think Adam Warlock will be at least partly an antagonist role for Guardians 3.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."

I imagine superhero media exists within the MCU and so they have the pre-existing term which they started applying to "real-life" superheroes.
All while blissfully unaware they themselves are actually superhero media and not real life.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
