Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Tangentially, I get that Taskmaster is really more about emotional catharsis and redemption for Natasha in the final scene.
But... I really wish they'd had an epic action scene at some point where Natasha cleans their clock. Like 'You know all the Avengers moves? so do I.' and takes her part because Natasha's been analysising all her friends techniques for years. (You wouldn't even need to imply Nat can take down the other Avengers because they would adapt and shift their technique if she tried but Taskmaster is just working off canned, copied routines)
I've never read comics Taskmaster so it probably doesn't work that way with him.
The more I think about it the more ideas I come up with in terms of turning Antonia Dreykov into a proper Taskmaster. She goes into mercenary work because her only skillset involves killing and she doesn't know where else to put it. Maybe she's a Punch-Clock Villain precisely because she's only in it for the work, or maybe she's prioritizing the money to help out her fellow Widows in some way. The movie already very subtly implies that her Power Copying tech works off an innate talent - easy to show her actually having a photographic memory/reflexes and maybe she even is something of a mimic overall. And her personality is a complete blank slate, and you can justify anything as a combination of her true personality finally getting a chance to breathe and her reacting to the years of abuse.
Fixing Taskmaster honestly isn't that complicated, it just requires a bit of lateral thinking to connect the dots the right way.

I'm on board with that. Juxtapose the fact that she has to work as a mercenary because it's the only way she has to make a living with the other fact that she's learning how to be a person after years of being enslaved by her father as his personal enforcer. She still lives that life by necessity, but at least she's learning how to do it on her own terms.
Deadpool piss-taking everything with impunity is exactly why we need him in the MCU: to provide setups for his piss-takes.
He can't make cracks about Peter at least not selling his marriage to Satan to buy his retcon in this version or ask Scott why he didn't just do the butt thing without someone or something provoking his commentary. He needs to interact with characters to get those opportunities.
Deadpool is also the easiest acquired character to canonize in the MCU because being purchased by Disney can literally be the explanation for why he's here now.
- Wade: Oh, hold on, Disney said I have to read this. (pulls out actual movie script) Uh, I was traveling through time to save my girlfriend and Quantum Realm something something, you get the picture. (tosses it) I think it has something to do with Spider-Man.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I still don't get why they'd go back to Taskmaster when we already have Echo who is more established, is getting her own series, and basically has the exact same powers. Bringing back Taskmaster is a lot of extra exposition to get a similar but flatter result.
Given the miniseries, it sounds to me like Echo is getting more setup for a reason anyway.
regulation pigeonBecause Echo is, in fact, a completely different character. They just have similar powers.
It'd essentially be like going "We already have Captain Marvel, who flies, so we don't need Nova as he also flies."
"All you Fascists bound to lose."- Wade: What, no witty banter? Man, you're way less fun than your comic book counterpart. But that's okay, I get it. They did that to me too once.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I understand, but it seems like they're building up Echo for a reason. It'd be weird to pull a 180 and go back to a very similar character. It'd be like if after Captain Marvel, one of the Nova Corp people from GotG showed up and was just in Endgame as Nova and Captain Marvel was never mentioned.

regulation pigeonI don't know how that tracks (as Echo and Taskmaster operate at a different level in narrative attention, i.e. "some guy who can copy moves" isn't as much of a world-shaking power as the flying brick types). If nothing else the fact they're introducing Echo would be more reason to get Taskmaster back in business so these two can meet and compare and contrast (either as allies or foes).
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Sure. But if it's one or the other, then I think Echo makes more sense narratively.
regulation pigeonI've read somewhere online that there might be a part of the show where She-Hulk yells at Kevin Feige for some reason? It's just rumors, but I'd be cool with a gag like that.
Also, imagine just how much fun we could have if She-Hulk co-starred in Deadpool 3. We'd have two fourth wall breakers engaging in Snark-to-Snark Combat while beating the shit out of bad guys. Count me in!
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."I see no reason it has to be one or the other. It just seems like an odd premise to me.
What this debate brought more to me is that I now do wish Echo faces Taskmaster in the show and we get essentially a photographic memory-based equivalent to a Shapeshifter Showdown.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."

The original draft for Black Widow did have a more comic accurate take on Taskmaster. The reasoning for the reetool was apparently because the original character didnt tie enough into Natashas story.
