Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

My feeling of multiversal stuff is the same as the general interconnectedness in that it works better A) in small dosages B) with certain characters and situations only. Past a certain point there's a high risk of everything collapsing into mush as you mix too many elements and none of them have time to settle. It becomes just a slideshow of things you may or may not recognize.

With multiversal stories I also feel like the stakes go straight to Hell fairly easily if you don't take care, as it might end up in just going too big too fast. You have to always anchor in some human drama.

Personally I really miss standalone and small scale stuff. "Street-level" (i.e. superheroes fighting super mobsters and super serial killers for rather than for the fate of the human race) stories are really missing in the MCU and sort of always have. The Serial Escalation feels like it's reaching a boiling point and they need some fresh blood. Think laterally rather than horizontally.

Films like Raimi's very own Darkman for example are really missing. The recent Batman was the closest, but Marvel could really do with more of those.

I think Hawkeye was the only low-scale story we've had in a while.

Hell the main antagonist for most of the shows run is the Tracksuit Mafia.

Ironically, the Flash movie being about Flashpoint is probably serendipity given some of the current news about Ezra Miller.

Ms. Marvel and She Hulk both look pretty low stakes.

Especially considering She Hulk seems like it's going to be a half hour comedy as opposed to a longer action-drama.

The shows so far seem liable to allow lower-stake things (as previously Netflix Marvel was still the strongest they ever were with low stakes) and that's a good sign, but that's more sidestepping the problem than actually fixing it (as the mainline movies run the same laps).

Well Thor 4 is next and going by the comics Gorr's grand plan might be about to create the Godbomb which will allow him to reshape the universe to his will or something to that effect.

After that Black Panther 2 which we know nothing about but considering the previous movie's setting will prolly be international in scale.

And after that Ant-Man 3 which will introduce Kang the Conqueror for real.

So scale is definitely not going lowkey for the movies any time soon.

My guess (and hope) is, Spider-Man 4 is gonna go a bit more lowkey.

Yeah, they absolutely need to turn the stakes down occasionally. Even for specific characters, and especially for the franchise as a whole. After we got literally half of all life in the universe dying, and then the real risk of all life dying, it seemed silly to try and turn things up higher. The multiverse stuff technically can go bigger, but probably shouldn't.

The multiverse opens up some interesting possibilities for stories, but yeah, there are plenty of potential problems. Something like the Flash's first movie being Flastpoint feels wrong.

That's a thing because they want a new start for the DCEU being well...the DCEU.

My main issue with Multiverse stories is that we end up spending screen time on characters we're never going to see again, rather than the characters who live and breath in the sacred timeline.

...That's how multiverse stories work. Even in comics we rarely see characters from Alt Universes become mainstays. Miles Morales is an exception. Edit: I mean it would be hard to do Miles with several different multiverse characters.

Why do i have the feeling that Black Panther might get delayed?

Is it still allegedly a Troubled Production?

That's a thing because they want a new start for the DCEU being well...the DCEU.

The DCEU has produced several highly successful films, though.

This is part of the reason nobody's ever approached the MCU in their shared-universe models: Too eager to jettison the whole thing at the first signs of trouble. Imagine if Marvel had given up on making these movies because Incredible Hulk sucked.

Disney's financial and technical backing helped a lot too.

They REALLY wanted Zack Snyder to be the head of the DCEU.

Like he had creative freedom for MOS and BVS.

Snyder was never the head of the DCEU. The only movies he had control over where the ones he directed and even then not that much. People just keep scapegoating the guy for everything that went wrong with the films.

Yeah same.

So, has there been an adaptation of the Thunderbolts in the MCU.

Man, I would love to see a variant of Norman Osborn being the director, but Songbird would be cool.
