Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It's rumored to introduce Namor, I think that's the only other bit of info.

The thing that's become clear is that as much as the Black Panther push was meant to promote Black Panther the character it was also meant to promote Chadwick Boseman the actor, taking pride in his rise to superstardom and expanding it further as the face of the MCU's future. I've generally been vocal about wanting T'Challa recast but even then I will acknowledge that recasting wouldn't address this issue because nothing will. It was a vehicle for a now-dead actor, and you can't just hand that wheel off to someone else.

What makes this suckier is that Wakanda was effectively being charioted off Boseman's star-power and now that he's gone so too is that chariot. So it's only natural that no matter what happens with Black Panther that that prominence fades back into the background, with Marvel once again in the process of star-building.

But yeah, we still have Star Lord, who's got issues both in and out of universe. It's bound to be that no matter what they do with him, there'd probably going to be a shit storm.

I think you're overblowing things. For better or for worse, Pris Chratt is still a very popular and well-liked actor in the general pop culture zeitgeist, it's mostly just this thread and a Vocal Minority on twitter who hate him.

As it currently stands there's not gonna be a shitstorm over him continuing the role.

On an unrelated note, is Fury a normal guy here?

Like he's not immortal or long-lived right?

Yeah, we've had no proof that Fury is empowered in anyway. From what we've seen of him over the years, he's just a regular Badass Normal.

We have a pretty clear timeframe for his early career too (iirc Winter Solider places him as a young agent in the 70’s or 80’s, and Captain Marvel puts him on the ride in SHIELD during the 90’s), so the MCU can’t easily retcon in the “Fury is immortal and was active during WW 2” stuff from the comics.

Plus, if Fury was immortal and pulling strings back in The '40s, you'd think that he'd try and recruit Phastos at some point.

I ask because I saw some interesting posts on when Punisher returns whether he might interact with Fury since they have a well known dynamic especiall in the famous Punisher Max series.

Which wait do we know which tours Frank was on during his time as a soldier?

MCU Punisher fought in Afghanistan, I think it's implied that MCU Fury fought in Vietnam.

Recently, the comics retconned Frank (and I think Fury, Reed, and Ben Grimm as well) as being a veteran of the fictional "Siancong War" as a way around having to keep up with the sliding timescale. Granted, the MCU actually moves in real time with real aging actors, so tying Frank and Fury to specific wars isn't as big an issue here.

Has there been any mention of the super soldier serum giving any extended lifespan in the MCU so far? Steve seemed to age completely normally when he was sent back in time.

It probably makes more sense not to, since the actors are going to age in real time no matter what.

They've been throwing around the idea of a Power Pack tv show or movie since before Avengers 1. The most recent plan was a Spy Kids-esque movie that was in development a few years ago, but the last we heard on that, it got canceled.

IIRC, they've been trying to make Power Pack work for ages but very recently (like, within the last few months) dropped those plans altogether, unfortunately.

[up] The Power Pack would work better in an animated medium rather than live-action.

It’d be a hard sell to get a largely teenage to adult audience to see a live action movie starring actual children. Not to mention how difficult that is from a production standpoint.

Even when aged up, they’re usually aged like 12 to 18

Plus, given that series in the MCU usually have several years go by between movies/seasons, the actors would likely have aged out of the roles before their first sequel could be made.

The reason why 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' was banned in China was because it featured the Statue of Liberty.

According to multiple sources, when the authorities got back to Sony, they had a request: Delete the Statue of Liberty from the ending of the film.

Man, it's a shame China's really shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to new MCU releases. I know that there's a bit of a crackdown on Western content coming into the country over there, but given how much mainland Chinese folks seem to like the movies, it's still kind of a shame.

That said, this definitely proves that making changes to cater to China isn't exactly important in the long run, which I'm okay with.

Shows how capricious Chinese censors are that appealing to them is a losing argument and thus it's not a viable excuse for the way Disney films keep self-censoring their LGBT content.

[up] Yeah. This is gonna be a real test for Disney and the entertainment it owns in regards to representing LGBT folks, now that their default excuse has gone out the window.

I'm confused what these "multiple sources" mentioned in the article are. Like...it couldn't *just* have been the statue, right?

This sounds pretty comical even by the standards of Chinese governmental censorship.

From what I hear their specific aversion to the Statue of Liberty may be because it looks similar to the Goddess of Democracy statue built after the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.
