Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The feeling I get is that Red Guardian is from the 1950's or 1960's, Kruschev years with the reforms, space programs and things like the Cuban Missile Crisis giving him legroom for super espionage (Kruschev's reforms might also explain Red Guardian's perspective that the Soviet Union used to be better as if he lived through it). As to why he's the only super soldier the Soviet Union apparently produced I'd go with the usual comic book thing that the Soviet formula was ridiculously volatile and lethal, killing off literally all of the subjects except Red Guardian and they could never strike the perfecet biological storm to replicate the process successfully.

This would make him probably old enough to have lived through WWII (or fought in it), so he might have been a regular WWII veteran/partisan.

[up]Omega Red could either be a prototype or a different program that came later on and was aborted. My guess is William Burnside in this universe isn't remembered because they don't want him to be remembered - he was probably either a black ops agent doing gross shit for the CIA, or, like John Walker, he went insane. Either way, Burnside was a historical black mark and someone they wanted to unperson.

In the comics Omega Red is the counterpoint to Weapon X. Weapon X is generally a Vietnam War-era program c. the mid 70's to 80's. In fact his early appearance has it basically that Omega Red was the last soviet superhuman from the tail end of the 80's who was let loose upon the world in the general chaos of the Soviet Union's dissolution. It'd be fairly easy to keep that premise with some tweaks (like he's been locked up in some abandoned soviet lab for the past 30-40 years).

Agree on the Burnside thing.

[up][up][up]That, or if Red isn't locked in a lab, he's either another spook like the Winter Soldier doing wetworks jobs for some nefarious organization (or being hired out by them as a mercenary), or he's long dead and was killed by someone at some point between the early 1990s and mid 2000s, and will be a villain in a period piece. I guess it's conceivable that he could be a mercenary operating in the open, but Red is traditionally so crazy, destructive, and murderous that you'd think he'd be way more known.

Realistically speaking, why couldn't this just be the same America from the comics, and have Shuma be the same Shuma from the comics?

In the case of Shuma-Gorath, he seems weaker than his comic book counterpart and he's not even called Shuma-Gorath in the film.

Comics America is older and more experienced, while MCU America is younger and doesn’t seem to have unlocked her Flying Brick powers yet. Also obviously MCU America is going to age in real time unlike comics America. So they can’t be the same.

Like I said before, I write it off as non-comics media being in their own multiverse.

Characters who are multiversal singularities get kind of ridiculous when you realize that means any fanfic that features them is 100% canonical too.

Yes, even those ones.

I remember the ending of Gwenpool’s first run acknowledged this, as she was afraid she’d die if her comic stopped but her future self assured her she’d continue to appear in crossovers and fanfics.

Golly, if they ever adapt Gwenpool to the MCU the premise of how she was a real person transported into the comics is going to get even more complicated with her appearing in films and comics simultaneously, including a readapting of her origin. tongue

Burnside would be great in a Weapon X movie (i.e. doing XMO: Wolverine correctly) - after Weapon X dissolves and its survivors go on the run, people connected to it start getting brutally murdered left and right and it becomes a question of who is doing it, and it is eventually revealed that Burnside is being used as a cleaner to scour every last trace of Weapon X from the earth and it's up to the remaining survivors to stop him.

If they want to go with a "multiversal constant" thing, I think the only reasonable way to do it is with a smaller infinity. There are still an infinite number of America Chavez variants in the multiverse, but a significantly fewer number of universes have her. Just like how if there's an infinite number of planets, there would also be an infinite number of red planets. Both are numbers are infinite, but the number of red planets is also infinitely smaller.

That way you can have these large pockets where characters are unique, but can still tell alt continuity stories and have other media appearances. Given that Loki established that the multiverse is a physical space that you can travel through in some capacity, Earth-199999 might be far away from Earth-616 in a very literal sense.

Funny thing related to Guardian, apparently a good deal of people are confusing Captain Carter with Captain Britain.

Like I only saw one person complain about it but it's a pretty amusing thought.

No spoilers for No Way Home, I haven't seen it, but several Spidey-villains have recently been reimagined from guys with powers in suits with one mechanical gizmo to powerless guys in borderline Iron Man suits. Guys like Rhino, Scorpion, and Vulture. Between the two versions, which do you prefer?

Rhino and Vulture AFAIK don't usually have powers, while Scorpion is actually one of the most powerful foes Spider-Man has... but is a meathead that doesn't really fulfill his potential.
