Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Hmm.
It's a risky move, but I believe Pratt was among those who supported Gunn when he was fired for those old tweets, so I get why he'd return the favour.
As I understand it, the real issue was that Pratt didn't denounce the church for their anti-LGBTQ claims, while still being part of it.
I'm worried Gunn's backing the wrong horse here, but at the same time I again can't blame him since Pratt stood by him for his past mistakes.
How much do we 100% know about what Pratt did or didn't do? I want to be sure of this.
One Strip! One Strip! That's not a good sign.
If they're that bad, no wonder Pratt even breathing the same air as them got him a target painted on his back.
Oh shit. You backed the wrong horse James Gunn. You backed the wrong horse.
One Strip! One Strip!I kinda get that feeling as well.
Like, the thing with the church is just extra ammo that may be legitimate. It seems people just find him to be a bit of a prick.
One Strip! One Strip!A lot of it is also frustration at Pratt being bizarrely overexposed to the point of snagging roles he's not considered good enough for due to having a rather limited and uninteresting acting range. If Hollywood is going to promote an actor so hard, at least choose someone who handle it.

His involvement in his church is definatly a red flag, and reason to keep a close eye on him, but he has never actually expressed homophobic views or done any kind of homophobic actions. This isn't the first time that people that work with Chris have publically critised the perception of him as being homophobic as not reflecting Chriss' actions.
He might well secretly be homophobic but I'm really not interested in critising public figures for beliefs they might secretly hold when they have no history of acting on them.
The fact he got defensive about Hillsong back in 2019 and denied it was homophobic is the action.
It's not much better anyway if it's a case of the homophobia not being a deal-breaker for him than it being the main draw for him.

Disgusted, but not surprisedHonestly I feel like there's enough reason to dislike or be at least mildly annoyed with him even beyond the Hillsong stuff. And the fact that he's not willing to disown the homophobia stuff in favor of bland apologetics even as the church has been documented to engage in cultish behavior suggests he's either implicitly OK with it and has a strange standard of what constitutes homophobia, willfully in denial, or is literally brainwashed (which is somewhat pitiable but doesn't really excuse his other spoilt behavior considering it's what led to his divorce with Anna Faris and subsequent fall into the church's hands).

It’s like “what if Wonder Woman actually hallucinated Thermiscira and really she was just an average kid whose parents foolishly had undergo shady medical experiments and then were gunned down in a shootout. Also she has a secret evil sister who-“
It’s bleh. It takes a cool cosmic setting and replaces it with grimdark straight out of a bad Sherlock episode. America Chavez’s deal was that she was inspired by her superhero mothers who saved the Multiverse and became one with it; making it that she imagined all that feels like a cruel retcon. And it doesn’t fix anything, she’s still generically Latina with no specific culture and now her backstory is tied to violence.
It also makes no sense with prior stories. If she’s not from a magic dimension made by Billy Kaplan, how does she know he’ll become the Demiurge in the future? Did her grandma have the exact same delusion? And how come she’s still unique in the Multiverse?

In awkward news.
"James Gunn defends Chris Pratt against call to replace him in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'"
Some on Twitter piled on, turning the conversation to Pratt's alleged association with a church that has supported gay conversion therapy. Gunn was not having it and tweeted in response, "For what? Because of your made-up, utterly-false beliefs about him?"
"For something that someone else told you about him that's not true?," Gunn tweeted. "Chris Pratt would never be replaced as Star-Lord but, if he ever was, we would all be going with him."
Gunn reiterated his support for Pratt in another response.
"I know the church he currently goes to," Gunn tweeted. "Do you? (The answer is you don't, but you heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone where he goes to church, so decided, "yeah, okay, I'll believe this terrible thing I heard online about this celebrity!")"
In 2019, Pratt denied the claim that he was a member of an anti-LGBTQ+ church. "It has recently been suggested that I belong to a church which 'hates a certain group of people' and is 'infamously anti —LGBTQ,'" Pratt posted on social media. "Nothing could be further from the truth. I go to a church that opens their doors to absolutely everyone."
Pratt supported Gunn in 2018 after the director was fired from the "Guardians" franchise after a number of controversial tweets from his past resurfaced. Gunn was later reinstated.
