Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

The thing to remember is that the greek pantheon differed from city state to city state because gods had areas where they were worshipped more strongly or differently
For example, Sparta liked Ares. They also had Aphrodite as a war goddess.
Athens like Athena a lot, obviously.
The Iliad and Odyssey were oral tradition where the specific tellings could vary teller by teller. But there is an iconic version and it’s the one that was written down. And Athens was a lot likelier to write their shit down than Sparta
A lot of the hilarious Ares asshole butt monkey portrayal could have been regional dunking on Sparta. But still hilarious

Forever liveblogging the AvengersI actually fully expect either this movie or the upcoming Percy Jackson show to make that Company Cross Reference.
As a former Percy Jackson follower, I will be incredibly happy if this happens.
I still would like some other gods to play the role of a Big Bad in a movie. Like, I know that everyone thinks Poseidon was a Nice Guy (in part because of Percy Jackson), but the truth is that he was just as much of a jackass, if not worse than Zeus, who would stir up hurricanes and earthquakes if he was in a foul mood. And I'm pretty sure he tried to kill Odysseus in The Odyssey for a very petty reason. It would be cool if they expanded on that kind of role.
Aphrodite was also known for being an emotional goddess who held a lot of grudges, so seeing her as an antagonist would be fun too.
As for Dionysus...well, I just think it would be funny if he became the bad guy because he was so wasted that he keeps doing Lethally Stupid things without realizing it.

"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."The Iliad and Odyssey were oral tradition where the specific tellings could vary teller by teller. But there is an iconic version and it’s the one that was written down. And Athens was a lot likelier to write their shit down than Sparta.
So by revering a god of war for war’s sake, Sparta neglected their literary practices and thus were ill-suited to passing down their word portraying their god of war as nuanced.
How ironic.

I think they were pretty much all jerks in one form or another.
Okey Dokey! He caused a storm to delay Odysseus's voyage home because Odysseus blinded Polyphemus the cyclops, who was a descendant of Poseidon. And he found out about Odysseus being the one to blind Polyphemus because Odysseus, in typical hubris, gave his name away.
Hades undefeated in terms of modern Greek pantheon depictions thus far I think. Hot, diverse, colorful, all passive-aggressive sniping beneath the veneer of grandiosity, benevolence and power.
The difference between Zeus and Poseidon in Greek Mythology is that with Zeus it wasn't always rape.
I find Dionysus cool because he's almost like a twisted version of Jesus, including being born as human and then sort of resurrected as a god. And his whole "thing" was that as a metaphor for how alcohol affects people, he could vary between being a lovable Chivalrous Pervert (i.e. the story of Ariadne) or engaging in horrible Disproportionate Retribution against someone who slighted him (i.e. the story of Pentheus).
Or like there's the version of him in Aristophanes' play Frogs, who is a rather effeminate (possibly Camp Gay) Lovable Coward intellectual. To be semi on-topic, this version of him (particularly when he interacts with Hercules) has the same kind of dynamic as Loki does in the MCU compared to the other Asgardians.

Also, what's interesting is the fact that Gorr uses the Necrosword in the comics, but that powerset was already used for Hela, who was admitted to be a Composite Character. I wonder how they're going to explain that. Also, for irony points, the Necrosword was made by Knull, the Symbiotes' God.
Interesting bit there is that how Gorr and Hela use their necroswords diverge wildly.
Hela just uses them to make spikes and swords.
Gorr though wields full on shadow on powers with a multitude of uses from constructing any type of weapon he desires to creating his own minions in the Black Berserkers that can function independent of him.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."She's wearing a mask though, not sure she'd be using her civilian name.
Though marvel has him go by Pluto.

I thought it was just a helmet. I'm not sure it's an attempt to hide her identity.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.I know Avengers Assemble just had Jane go by Thunderstrike as her code-name. So, that could be an option.
Yes, there's another hero by that name. And yes, not a lot of people care about Avengers Assemble. I'm just bringing up how another adaptation handled it.
As a sad bonus, most people don't care about Eric Masterson anymore
Forever liveblogging the Avengers

And would be some pretty funny Self-Deprecation on the Mouse's part to boot.
