Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

One way or the other, I'd really like for Frank to stay in his own corner. I always prefered the gritty, realistic tones of his own stories to him crossing over with regular superheroes.

We already have that for all the rest, let him have his own Streetlevel shtick.

I just feel like one Badass Normal successfully taking on Frank and the Defenders and having a good shot at winning would be a good arc villain, and Barracuda is the kind of villain who could pull that off.

At most an adaptation of Purgatory and Frankencastle are unlikely at least.

Yeah, Frank taking on low-level superhumans once in a rare while should be the extent of that.

Depending on how much they choose to take from the Netflix Punisher series specifically, it might not be so much of a problem with Frank. Outside of his first appearance on Daredevil, which plays him more dark, damaged and sinister, Netflix Frank turned out to be one of the more overtly heroic versions of the Punisher we've seen.

By the end of his series, he's basically just your average action movie hero morality wise, and content wise wasn't too far off from what Marvel Studios later did with - say - Falcon & Winter Soldier.

I'm still surprised people want to see him join the Midnight Sons based on that fake/unreleased comic cover. While I see some team ups working, such as with Daredevil, Moon Knight and maybe Blade, Frank would definitely stick out like a sore thumb next to Doctor Strange.

Yeah, Midnight Sons should strictly be for the supernatural side, the only teams I could see Frank with are the Defenders/Marvel Knights and maybe the Thunderbolts.

Punisher in Midnight Suns/Sons only makes sense under the idea that you're also having the team be a pseudo "Marvel Knights", aka a hypothetical "adult-oriented" Marvel team-up.

No do not poke at how many things aren't actually correct about that, the idea basically begins and ends at the comparison to Justice League Dark.

Besides the far better pick for a supernatural gunslinger would be Elsa Bloodstone anyway. She even fits better in the Constantine mold.

Well Frank is just a guy with guns.

He'd be pretty useless in most scenarios.

Everything Frank can do against the supernatural, Elsa can do better. Frank is made for ordinary crooks and organized crime.

Honestly, Frank, like many Badass Normal, has the power of the plot, so he could kill with bullets the character that logically shouldn't be able to kill with bullets.

Frank debuted fighting Spider-Man on behest of a guy in a jackal costume. He fights normal guys for tone reasons, not because of skill or whatever.

To be fair, fighting Spider-man isn't much of a feat, as he canonically holds himself back against street-level opponents.

I've been saying for half a decade now I want an Elsa Bloodstone film. So many monsters in the marvel universe to explore, heck strand her in the Savage Land.

Elsa in a DMC meets Buffy TV series would be great.

Y'know, I wouldn't mind the Punisher getting involved in some supernatural story completely by accident that confuses/pisses him off enough to just give up and leave midway through the story, then have him bring it up as a Continuity Nod / Brick Joke in some other series.

Would it be dumb? Yes. Would it be kinda funny though? Also yes. Will other people see my viewpoint on this? Probably not.

Maybe Frank has a run-in with The Hood, barely escapes with his life, and is rescued by the Midnight Sons. That or some vampires.

I’m not a huge fan of the recurring theme of Punisher just shooting villains heroes have trouble dealing with

But in the case of the Hood I’d laugh my ass off and never stop laughing

I'm not surprised.

Nobody seems to like the Hood.

...was he a Brian Michael Bendis creation?

I think he was.

He'd try with the Hood and it wouldn't work, then Parker stops messing around and Frank has to run for his life and gets saved by a couple Midnight Sons who are in town on an unrelated matter. Probably ends with Blade or Elsa unceremoniously killing him and Frank just being like "I don't even want an explanation".

It would be funny for a superpowered villain to encounter the Punisher and go "What he just shoots guns, thats it? Why the fuck is this guy considered so scary? Spider-Man's more scary than this loser, at least when he punches me I feel it."

I envisioned Barracuda just using something like armor-piercing or explosive rounds or a grenade launcher to deal with someone like Luke Cage, so realistically Frank could do the same.

In War of the Realms, a situation you’d think he’d be out of his depth in given all the nonsense monsters, he just grabbed a bunch of rocket launchers and blew up a fire demon’s head

Oddly, frost giants are more durable to explosives than fire demons

I think I saw somewhere on this wiki that the reason why the superheroes fight supervillains all the time is because Frank keeps on killing the mundane ones.
