Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Oh please. I hope that you can change the attacks depending in what ring you decide to use like in the comics.

Maybe Shang-Chi will include elements from the Agents of Atlas comic series, which did tie in the Yellow — sorry, the Golden Claw's origin with a honest-to-goodness mythological Chinese dragon.

I wouldn't be surprised if the MCU's Mandirin ends up being a Composite Character of not only the comics Mandarin and Fu Manchu, but also Marvel's other big Yellow Peril villain, the Yellow/Golden Claw.

I thought that Shang chi at most would be at the level of Spider-man or Loki, I am surprised that he will fight against a hulk level enemy.

Do we know when this movie is set? Any reason why Wong (if that is him) is here and not fixing the multiverse?

Yeah, that's definitely Abomination. The subtitles confirm it. The sorceror Blonsky is fighting though, everyone claims it's Wong, but we never see his face so I'm not sure.

I kinda wish they would have given Abomination the new horror look from Immortal Hulk. Though i guess that's Fortean and not Blonsky.

[up] Eh, I disagree. That look is far too weird to just drop into something else. If they wanted to make a whole movie with that vibe, maybe.

I really hope the rings all have different powers. Isn't that like the entire fun of the ten rings?

Based on what we saw in the trailer, I doubt that individual rings have different powers. The magic/ki blast attacks we see appear to use an entire arm's worth of rings to fire. The rings themselves are all visually identical and the change to make them arm bands means you pretty much have to use them together 'cause, like, good luck reaching the second from the bottom without awkwardly dumping the three above it first.

It seems pretty clear to me that the film's strictly using the Mandarin's rings for, like, chunky ki blasts. Kung fu magic/tech artifacts that let you blast energy attacks out of your hands and can be used as an energy whip or whatever.

I do wonder whether these rings are alien tech like in the comics or strictly mystical artifacts though.

I'm hoping alien tech. IIRC, the Rings in the comics are supposed to be from the reactor of an alien ship. They were the ship's power supply. That does mesh with energy blasts we see in the trailer. The Mandarin could totally have scavenged the core of an alien reactor and now he's basically doing the sci-fi equivalent of wearing plutonium rods to shoot nuclear fusion beams.

Considering it looks like Shang-Chi is fighting the Mandarin with his own set of rings, what's the likelihood he ends the movie taking them for himself? Like, they'd probably be a more reliable superpower than really good martial arts.

Mandarin also seems to be really freaking old according to the first trailer, unless that was his identical ancestor as Mandarin in the past (also possible - Armored Adventures did the same thing), so the rings probably aren’t harming his health. Much the opposite, in fact, unless he’s got the Ra’s Al Ghul thing where he’ll like shrivel into an elderly corpse without constant exposure.

Man, the Abomination appearance really threw me, and I love it. When people were saying there was a surprise cameo in the trailer, I was thinking “oh, maybe it’ll be Rhodey or something for the Iron Man connection,” but it looks like we’re getting superhero cage match shenanigans and I love those.

Have you heroes fight other characters' villains is straight out of comics. The MCU is embracing that and I love it.

Given that shot in the trailer where Shang-Chi and the Mandarin are having a tug-of-war with the rings, I totally expect Shang-Chi to take them at the end. The MCU doesn't really like Badass Normals, so it makes sense that they'd reimagine the Ten Rings as kung fu superweapons specifically so they can give Shang-Chi kung fu superweapons by the end of his origin film.
