Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Re: The Mandarin in the first Iron Man.

Aside from the Ten Rings terrorist organization, there is a deleted bit, late in the film, where Jarvis tells Tony he has a call from The Mandarin (among other people) that Tony chooses to ignore. The scene was featured in a sizzle reel at SDCC, and inspired a good bit of comment in the fan press at the time.

In which it turns out Shang Chi is actually a kung-fu basketball legend, and it turns out the whole movie is actually about the Mandarin's team of monstars with stolen skillz trying to kidnap-

Wait, wrong movie, I think.

[up] You joke but that's not entirely inaccurate given what the rings look like in this film.

So the ten rings are arm bands here.

In screenshots that I've seen he looks like a comic accurate Abomination but unless they decided to give him a redesign it's not him. Also was he fighting Wong?

Very cool trailer. And no one is talking about the dragon underwwater.

Regarding the other spoiler, I'm going with the theory that they decided to handwave Abomination looking more comic-accurate (and less creepy) because of further transformation he experienced. In light of the cage fighting, I'm feeling good about the idea that he'll be substituting for Absorbing Man in the She-Hulk and I'm going to guess that his further transformation was a good thing for his mental state.

I mean. I feel like Bruce Banner has changed more dramatically since that movie than Abomination here, if that is him.

At this point, it's easy to guess that Marvel's schedule is pretty shot, so who even knows.

No, that was debunked by Simu Liu. Merchandise has it named The Great Protector. It could be based off him though.

And the rings are arm bands now. Interesting.

Abomination is a twist if it's really him. But yeah, Marvel had a schedule and COVID-19 foot its foot up the ass of that schedule so who knows now.

Yeah, that appears to be the dragon who appeared on the Funko merch, who looked nothing like Foom and was named something different.

I'm not sure what it is, tbh. The Shang Chi comics this is story is largely based on weren't too mystical, that came later, and it isn't an Iron Man thing brought over to this movie like Mandarin's stuff. It looks like we're delving into MCU original stuff with that, or stuff that's so far removed from the source material that it might as well be MCU original (like Hope van Dyne was, or JARVIS).
