Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Malekith wanted some Cherry Coke and everybody was telling him "No, you can't have that delicious liquid". I can relate to that.

So The Marvels’ title contains both the logos of Monica and Kamala. That pretty much confirms that they will both appear.

Had a feeling the sequel to Captain Marvel might be more of a dual protagonist movie since director DaCosta’s Little Woods was like that. Looks like it’s going to be triple protagonist instead!

There's something amusing about how Kamala whose powers are shape-shifting is teaming up with 2 energy God beings.

Yeah, but counting's HARD. It used to be easy since posts had convenient numbers next to them, but now you have to highlight the timestamp that post was made at in order to see what number it is.

Ooh, I am intrigued by the name being changed to The Marvels. I like it. Makes it seem like it's gonna be more of an ensemble piece as opposed to being primarily about Carol with Monica and Kamala serving as sidekicks of sorts. I am so excited to see Kamala on the big screen. grin

Do we know who's writing and directing it?

[up][up] It's being directed by Nia DaCosta, and written by Megan McDonnell. (Link goes to their IMDB pages).

Overall, I still expect Carol Danvers to be the head of the ensemble. But the name change means that Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau will have bigger stories that might not directly involve Carol.

Maybe I'm too plugged into certain areas but I saw too many people flipping out to call the backlash basic or slight.

I never claimed that it was. What actually happened was a load of bullshit. But I'm just saying that if you kept it at that level, it'd be perfectly acceptable and understandable.

Man, I'm sure glad I watched WandaVision in one go last weekend. tongue

Personally, the fake!Pietro thing didn't bother me, probably for a few reasons. One, I was spoiled beforehand that Evan Peters was gonna show up again. Two, I didn't have wait weeks to see a resolution to where he came from. Three, it was already a bit of a headache to explain to my dad why Quicksilver was played by a different actor and why it was so amusing (since I don't think he's seen the later X-Men movies). Imagine if I had to bring up how they're using the Multiverse to bring in an alternate version of a character from another film series due to the character being owned by two separate companies that are now one.

Shit, imagine explaining Multiverse of Madness if we didn't get Disney Plus? I'd be just as lost as he would.

I'm firmly in camp "getting hyped up about some rumor, fan theory, or wishful thinking and then getting mad when it doesn't happen is entirely your own damn fault."

Like the gullible people in the Smash Bros. fandom who believe every rumor and leak and then get mad at Smash Bros. when it turns out to be false, instead of themself or whoever spread the rumor.

I was pretty convinced Fauxsilver was just a Casting Gag from the start, though I also don't really give a shit about the Fox X-Men movies so perhaps I just have less stake in the matter.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

I was just happy to get Wandavision at all. Wanda is my favorite female hero in the MCU, has been since her introduction, so I was super hyped to see a show exploring her character and it did not let me down. Episode 8 in particular was AMAZING, one of my favorite things in the entire MCU.

Turns out Doctor Strange almost did appear in WandaVision but his cameo was cut.

Marvel struck a deal with Benedict Cumberbatch to appear in the final episode of the show as Dr. Strange. But late in the process, they wrote him out. “Some people might say, ‘Oh, it would’ve been so cool to see Dr. Strange,’” says Feige. “But it would have taken away from Wanda, which is what we didn’t want to do. We didn’t want the end of the show to be commoditized to go to the next movie — here’s the white guy, ‘Let me show you how power works.’” That meant the Dr. Strange movie, too, had to be rewritten. In the end, Feige says, Marvel’s process is “a wonderful combination of very dedicated coordination, and chaos. Chaos magic.”

At one point, back when Dr. Strange was supposed to be part of the story, the in-universe commercials were going to be messages from Strange to Wanda, and there was also talk of having Cumberbatch appear in one of the ads, head writer Jac Schaeffer says.

Eternals looks cool. The Marvels sound like a band, and if that means there's more 90s music coming along, then I'm here for it.

As someone who loves multiverse stuff in general, in the end the only thing I was really all that disappointed by was the fact that Fake!Pietro could have been removed from the story and basically nothing would have changed. From what I understand, part of the ending was changed due to coronavirus disruptions, so I do get it, but having a character around who Wanda has projected her memories of her brother onto could have had some interesting payoff for Wanda's development at/near the end. I would have appreciated it if they'd had at least another dialogue scene together. She's almost instantly suspicious of him, and then after that the plotline just sort of peters (ha!) out.

[up][up] That's pretty much how I felt about the possibility of a Strange cameo, yeah.

[Grandpa Troper Voice]: It used to be easier to count posts to avoid bottomers in ([up]) the olden days when post numbers were put next to the posts themselves. _______[up]

However, if you hover over the URL timestamp of your post (that thing up there [up]) it'll tell you what number post it is, if that helps.

[up] Yeah, I can gel with that. Ultimately, the big problem I have with Faux Pietro is that he didn't really do anything. His big contribution is occupying Wanda during the climax between Wanda and Agatha, but that distraction doesn't really go anywhere either.

Eternals looks a little too normal from what little we've seen of it so far. Just a group of people standing around in normal clothing. I was hoping for, like, Guardians of the Galaxy meets Disney's Hercules.

Put me down for team 'getting hyped over fan theories and getting disappointed is your own fault,' especially after watching Star Wars as a franchise suffer actual damage because a few high profile youtubers got salty that their pet theories were wrong. Fanfiction is fun, but that's all theories are, ultimately.

It's like all those people who do those 're-writing X' blogs and videos. Doing your own fanfic version of whatever is fine, but changing something that already exists is so different (and IMO, easier) than writing it in the fist place that doing so and presenting it with the smug 'obviously this would have been better' tone really rubs me the wrong way.

It’s incredible how very little is known about Eternals.

Compared to Jack Kirby’s other cosmic God story over at DC, the New Gods not only have several well known characters but their mythology is a common part of the DCU especially their tech in the Motherboxes.

I’m not even sure whose the main protagonist & antagonist of Eternals compared to how I can name Orion, Mister Miracle, and Darkseid immediately.

The one thing I think Marvel is doing poorly in regards to the theorizing, which is the same thing Star Wars did, is that they're leaning into it by being coy and silent, not giving answers, and letting shoddy news sites and the like dictate the narrative for the films instead of themselves.

They don't early plot synopses or such any more, they do teasers and trailers much closer to release than before, they only out and say "this news is fake" if that news involves the actors themselves, etc. They recognize that part of fanculture as a viable thing to nurture, but try to nurture it by doing... nothing, which is part of what causes the worst parts of that fan behavior to flourish instead - and for certain elements to exacerbate the problem by taking advantage of those fans.

Like, it's way past the point where we should have a basic idea of what No Way Home is about. Let alone, say, Eternals. We need to know what that movie is going to even be, even if that doesn't actually involve the closer plot information a trailer idea. Just a basic idea.
