Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I think pigs will fly before that happens, but I'd be pleasantly (very) surprised.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."I am in the "suspecting Marvel has a "From Academy Award winner Chloe Zhao" trailer waiting in the wings and that's why marketing for Eternals has been crickets so far" camp, so I imagine we'll start getting promo soon.
Just so everyone's aware, the only MCU film to win Oscars is Black Panther with three; some others have been nominated mostly in the technicals.
If there's one thing I can take solace in with the MCU, it's that I just can't see anything that's upcoming being anywhere near as bad as Inhumans. Not a snowball's chance in hell. They'd have to actively try to make something that comes close.
Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)Chloe Zhao is definitely very talented, but I do worry that a lot of Eternals will have already been created by committee to the point that her individual voice and style of direction might end up smothered in the process. Examples include the final battle of Black Panther which was mostly already pre-storyboarded without that much input from Coogler.
Hm, that explains quite a bit, actually.
Oh God! Natural light!I'm looking forward to Eternals, as much as I can look forward to anything after the shambling disaster of the season finale of Falcon & The Winter Soldier (which has thrown the biggest bucket of cold water in my excitement for anything MCU-related since Iron Man 3).

"All you Fascists bound to lose."I have been kind of curious as to how Zhao's down-to-earth non-actor-focused filmography so far will square with the big budget A-list-filled space opera Eternals is supposed to be and "already created by committee and they just needed a big name to fill the gaps" is uhhh worst case scenario, so fingers crossed.
I have some faith because The Eternals are a far lesser property so they presumably won't be breathing down people's necks as much. Marvel has shown more willingness to give leeway at times in certain occasions like with Waititi with Ragnarok (because Marvel was desperate for anyone to rehabilitate Thor so they gave him basically carte blanche) and Ryan Coogler with Black Panther (presumably due BP being traditionally a "lesser property").
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Thing with the MCU is it's run more like a TV show than a traditional film franchise.
Films usually have the director as the chief creative force behind the project; the screenwriter, once they've sold their script, has no control over what's done with it. But in television, the project is overseen by the showrunner and the writers' room; directors are hired guns who, while they do bring their own style and creativity to the mix, are not at the top of the artist totem pole.
Im surprised to see so much love for Klue on the previous page. I really liked Andy Serkis's performance, but I was certain that enough miniuet of that character would have outstayed his welcome. Killmonger killing him also made perfect sense.
However, big monster made of sound? Okay that's tempting. I'd love to see the avengers fight something that would give you a real head scratcher about how to even hurt.
Between Klaue's mixtape and the Zemo Dance, I'm now thoroughly convinced that the next phase of the MCU needs to include a Musical.
... I thought I was joking but suddenly I wonder...
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."Well, the first GoG film was not that far off the mark.
Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.

It's very possible Marvel might drop a trailer soon, pasted with "Academy-Award winning director" with her name. And I'm all for it.
There's rumors floating around that Eternals might be a push toward the Oscar ceremonies for next year, and looking at the sheer caliber of the cast, I'm inclined to believe it.
