Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yeah, though it’s kind of awkward in practice and there’s a bit of a Broken Base about it.

IMO, it’s just reducing a character to a Replacement Goldfish.

Yeah I'm actually more bothered by Klaue dying than Killmonger. Killmonger's ending was pitch-perfect. Klaue had a lot of potential left in him and Serkis's performance was great. I'd probably have had Killmonger deliveirng Klaue alive to stand trial in Wakanda and have him escape amid the chaos of the Killmonger-T'challa civil war of sorts.

If I recall, even Ryan Coogler himself was regretful that he had to kill Klaw, I can easily see him bringing him back.

Killmonger, though, I agree shouldn't be brought back. His death was way too meaningful.

Though I definitely wouldn't be against having Michael B Jordan come back as a different character. Dude's too awesome not to use.

I can imagine an easy way to bring back Klaw is to bullshit some Vibranium device exploding near his copse during Killmonger's coup and it revives him in his sonic form.

[up]And then Andy Serkis actually gets to do the thing he's famous for.

Yeah, I know he was originally just a cameo because he helped out with Ultron's mocap, but still...

I completely forgot about Klaue and thus I'll definitely replace Killmonger with him.

I would like to have Ultron return. If only because Spader is one of my favorite actors, and it was a waste to kill him off in his first appearance in my opinion.

On further thought Sonic Klaw would be a really good antag since he would presumably be able to negatively affect Vibranium and thus negate BP and Wakanda's greatest strength.

Yeah, I'd love to see Ultron return too. While had my issues with him, I think that was more of a result of the writing to Age of Ultron then the character himself. Spader gave a great performance with what he was given, and if Ultron was penned by somebody who could hone in and properly flesh out his motives and personality, I think he'd be a fantastic villain.

Speaking of which, while I'm not as familiar with the character, I think Strucker kind of got the shaft in that film too. I know he was only the opening bad guy, but I hear the character's a lot more interesting in the comics and Thomas Kretschmann deserved to do a lot more with him.

Age of ultron is one of those things were the executive meddling affecting the plot is painful to see.

Strucker was pretty much wasted, though it's lessened if you look at Alexander Pierce as the MCU's proper adaptation of him: a major HYDRA leader and the Arch-Enemy of Nick Fury, who orchestrated an infiltration of SHIELD. Not a perfect fix, but what are you going to do?

Also, could we see Klaue in the Wakanda series? Seeing as how the Black Panther movies are already going to be focusing on the world of Wakanda, the actual show has an - admittedly small - chance of being a prequel. Though I would prefer bullshit Back from the Dead Sonic!Klaue.

Strucker got the shaft intensely in that film. He has nothing in common with the character from the comic aside from monocle, name and HYDRA affiliation.

This is something comics Strucker has struggled with as well. His shtick used to be that he was the Evil Counterpart to Nick Fury: The WWII veteran spymaster, but with the phasing out of WWII vet Fury, and as Fury is to SHIELD, he is to HYDRA (much more than the Red Skull, in fact) he's been left without a real arch-enemy to oppose. It doesn't help a lot of his shticks (the WWII fiend in modern times, the face of HYDRA) get usurped by the Red Skull.

This is my idea how would mutants be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After the Blip brings people back to life, people all around the world begin manifesting latent mutant abilities as a result of their X-Gene being activated by the dispersed essence of the Infinity Stones destroyed by Thanos. The initial emergence of mutants causes a sudden panic as the early mutants cannot control their powers and abilities, as well physical mutations.

He always gets usurped a lot too. Like Madame Hydra.

That has been suggested been suggested before. But i'm not sure it works with mutants.

[up][up] I think that might make mutants too much like the Inhumans, though.

To me the big difference is, Inhumans get their powers from an external source (Terrigen) while mutants get their powers when they hit puberty.

Though I guess you could blend those two things together, so that teenage mutants like the OG X-Men or the New Mutants get the second origin, while older mutants like Professor X or the Blob get the first one.

I think it can work as a replacement of the "Children of the Atom" moniker. In the comics there's a running bit mutants have always existed, but their numbers dramatically increased since the beginning of the Atomic Age (1945 onwards), implicitly due the atomic particules spread in the atmosphere somehow contributing to the activations of the X-gene. You could replace the atomic metaphor with the snap and the blip, and that mucking with Infinity energy unlocked more X-Genes both in the snapped and unsnapped populaces.

X-Men: Children of the Snap doesn't sound very catchy though.

I'm generally favorable to the basic formula of:

1. Mutants have always existed, but ones that manifest abilities have been extremely few in number

2. Event happens that causes a dramatic increase in the number of mutantsnote . This event could very well be the snap.

This allows historical mutants to be a thing when it's especially relevant to a particular character's backstory, but also explain why there's a big modern population of mutants when mutants haven't been mentioned before.

Keeping villains around in live action is trickier compared to the comics. You have to worry about schedule conflicts, actors falling sick or dying, wanting more money, potential drama on set etc. And really the only reason they are kept around in the comics is because the stories don't end while the MCU eventually will.

So while it can be disappointing when villains die it isn't too surprising. And as long as they are well written before dying I don't think it's that much of a problem.

That's my thought too. They were always around, but there aren't that many of them. But them more start popping up by the time the X-Men show up.

She is in fact the second woman ever to win the best director Oscar (first was Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2009) as well as the first Asian woman. She is the third Asian person (male or female) in general after Ang Lee and Bong-Joon Hoo (and Bong-Joon Hoo is obviously Korean, while Lee is Chinese-Taiwanese).

That's a pretty high pedigree there.
