Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The official answer is that he hurt his back and they weren't sure he'd be able to continue, but allegedly it was actually contract negotiation stuff because he felt he wasn't being payed enough. The story goes that he was claiming his injury was more severe as a negotiation tactic, and Sony shot back by planning to just recast and move on without him. Don't know if they were actually willing to go through with it or they were just banking on it scaring him enough to back down.

Mind you, this is just what I've read online... So don't quote me on this.

Supposedly Sony also fired Andrew Garfield and were looking to replace him in Amazing Spider-Man 3 (I don't know what for) before they canceled it and struck a deal with Disney.

[up] From what I can recall, it was because Garfield was quite vocal about the Executive Meddling that went on during The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Later on, he failed to appear at an event set to announce the release date of the third film. Combined with the last two films receiving mixed reviews, I guess he was considered an acceptable loss.

[up]That's pretty unfair. With all the problems those movies had (though I actually consider Amazing 1 to be a pretty decent flick), he certainly wasn't one of them.

Holland is charming but I much prefer the TASM duology's take on Spidey over the MCU's Iron...Boy.

I prefer Holland. I just did not like Garfield in the role. He was too much of a cool guy (in personality) for my taste. I wanted to smack him with his skateboard at way to many points in those films. I don't blame Garfield, but the writing. Still I just could not get into the character there.

Holland is pretty much perfect for the role, he's just let down by the fact his character has to be neutered to be Tony's protégé.

Has Uncle Ben even been mentioned here?

[up]x2 IIRC the suitcase in Far From Home has Ben's initials on them, but he still hasn't been mentioned in dialogue.

[nja]'d

IMO the lack of Uncle Ben references is probably from the desire to not be seen as repeating story beats from the Raimi and Webb movies, and Ben Parker was a fairly big part of both.

To be fair. While a lot here are against Tony pretty much replacing Ben, myself included, we are pretty much a vocal minority. As in terms of mass fan perception, form my experience, Iron Dad has completely overshadowed drear old Uncle Ben in popularity. So the move worked out for them in the end.

That said I still want to hear about him in No Way Home.

I mean from a business point and in terms of fan perception, yes. I still would have greatly preferred Uncle Ben.

I thought it was a nice idea for a different take at first, but that they should've dropped it almost entirely after the first movie (specifically, the point to start moving away from it should've been partway between Infinity War, imo). As a result of Peter's whole character being centered around making papa Tony Stark proud and maybe being the next Iron Man, his overall arc ultimately becomes more of "sidekick gets the torch passed" rather than growing into a Spider-Man story - which extends to how all of his villains are actually Tony Stark related in this continuity.

I've begun to wonder if they did that on purpose, due to them knowing Spidey's involvement was potentially temporary, especially when Peter's first couple appearances were being made. If everything Spidey was actually folded into Iron Man instead of its own thing, then hypothetically Spidey went away they could've just kept doing Iron Man stuff without having an outlying part of the universe they have to clean up.

[up][up] I'm just not sure what your point is by Iron Dad surpassing Uncle Ben in popularity.

Its not like its become a thing since as in Tony hasn't replaced Ben in adaptations like the Marvel's Spider-Man cartoon nor the Insomniac game.

And Peter and Tony have definitely not gotten any closer in the comics.

[up]x2 I kinda think if Disney/Marvel were intentionally hedging their bets on Spidey they wouldn't have ended FFH on that big cliffhanger.

[nja]'d

[up] The MCU has more eyeballs on it than most other Marvel properties, so I wouldn't be surprised if more people were familiar with Iron Dad. Admittedly, Spider-Man has one of the most iconic (and imo best) origin stories in the big two so it's not like Ben'll be forgotten all that soon.

They aren't doing it now, but remember that even when FFH was being made there was a huge contention between the two companies about whether their business relationship would continue.

Absolutely when they first decided to put Spidey in Civil War and during Homecoming (IE when the "Iron Dad stuff started), it's unlikely anyone was sure how long the arrangement would last.

x13[up] I thought it was Iron Boy Jr.

[up][up][up]In all seriousness, though, I think what Bullman means is that at least in terms of the MCU, their relationship is pretty popular in certain circles and the casual audience seems to like it just fine. Which is probably why despite complaints, they haven't ditched the angle completely. There were enough people into it.

Ben is definitely still popular, but not as much. Which makes me kind of sad to be honest.

You also have my Axe.

But it needs to be sharpened.

Right, so everyone already moved on mostly. I kinda get Iron-dad (like Tony is a the most famous engineer in universe, and I feel like, it could have been a thing in the original comics when Peter was that age). That being said, I'm not a huge fan of it, and I never will be.

I'm really hoping it's something that gets tossed in the deepest ditch possible at some point. It's a massive detriment to Peter's character.

So what do you guys think will be the next Avenger style movie? I mean obviously they will do something akin to an Avengers 5. It's just a matter of what it will be.
