Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

From a purely storytelling point of view, I'd be interested in seeing Shuri take up the mantle and the crown, as it would offer some very good opportunities of character development and also give us another female lead in the MCU

I would've preferred Shuri to have an arc that builds up to her having the moniker, rather than htme having to hastily give it her offscreen because they don't have any other choice. That in turn diminishes the arc she would've had otherwise.

So Sam’s getting his own movie. Good to know. I wonder if Bucky’ll still be around.

The legend has returned.

[up]I assume he probably will.

Though I haven't seen the last episode yet, so for all I know maybe he dies in it. I hope not.

EDIT: He doesn't! Good.

"let the people who worked with Chadwick decide"

Yeah, I strongly desagree. They shouldn't be the ones to decide, is Boseman family the one opinions that really matter in the end. They're the ones who should know if recasting T'Challa or not is insulting to Boseman memory and the legacy he was trying to bouild with the character.

And even if Boseman wishes was for T'Challa to be recast, but his family find it to painfull to approve, I believe it should be respected.

But personally, I think the idea of killing any character because of the death of it's actor is wrong. After all, some years later with the inebitable reboot of the MCU (or the introduction of the multiverse), we'll see a new Black Panther, but it won't be the same as it won't be a continuation of the character we ended loving.

I liked The Falcon and the Winter Soldier for the most part. Some incredibly strong moments, but also some rather sloppy writing moments that I think would have been better served by a second, longer show with less cinematics than a movie. So my opinion towards this news is mixed, although trending positive.

As much as I'm excited for Cap 4, I really hope Marvel doesn't do an abrupt about face regarding Spellman just because the last episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier divided fans and critics. Look at how Lucasfilm did Rian Johnson dirty after The Last Jedi.

I'm curious what story it will be.

Considering how at the end Contessa told Walker things are about to get weird, maybe its an adaption of Remender's dimensional travel arc? tongue

The episode has been out for like less than a day, so it’s way too soon to judge reception to it and the series as a whole (even though personally I found the finale disappointing.)

Interestingly Deadline claims Captain America 4 would be separate from whatever new project Chris Evans was reported to have signed on for last year. I still think the latter is gonna either be Secret Invasion (where he'd be a Skrull claiming to be the real Steve Rogers) or a period piece/flashback whenever Wolverine is introduced.

If they really don't want to recast T'Challa, maybe they could do what Lucasfilm did with Carrie Fisher and use older footage of him to give him enough of a role to pass on the mantle? Honestly, as jumbled and confused as Rise of Skywalker was, that bit actually was pretty well-executed (some obvious shadowy behind shots aside).

I doubt they have enough unused footage of him to facilitate that, and in my opinion the attempt with Carrie Fisher really didn’t work out. It was way too obvious that she wasn’t actually talking to the characters and that the editors were stringing together random bits and pieces. Very awkward when they had to find an excuse for Rey and Leia to pass a lightsaber back and forth 3 times.

Hell, Mark Hamill is still around to be his own self with CG de-aging and it still doesn't come out great.

I didn't say it was perfect, I'm just saying it was a lot less intrusive than I feared it would be. But yeah, there probably isn't enough footage to do that with him. I was really just spitballing here.

A thought.

Is it a recast if they go with an alternate T’Challa from another universe shows up?

I understand the whole "the actor is irreplaceable" from a Hollywood point of view, in that it theoretically respects the actor's career, but from a racial point of view doing discard and draw whenever a black character - especially one that was starting to have a lot of influence and relatability towards the black audience - faces behind the scenes issues, just reinforces the idea that the images black people create are replaceable.

That logic works just as hard, if not harder, in the opposite direction: if they replace Boseman, it could reinforce the idea that black actors are replaceable. Especially since Marvel Studios has only recast a part twice before, and one of those times was also with a black character.

They're also likely hesitant because of how big a deal the Black Panther was and how iconic Boseman's portrayal became practically overnight. I wouldn't relish another actor who has to deal with being The Other Darrin there, so I can see why the idea of going the legacy route instead is appealing.
