Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

It was the 40s. Today they’d make him do the talk show circuit and PS As.
x4 Well, at least that can be attributed to narrow-minded Army brass deciding that a single Super-Soldier would be better suited for propaganda purposes than a battlefield. Which ignores the fact that Cap could be (and indeed later became) a formidable commando, but again, narrow-minded Army brass.

They do not. It's a huge thing. The only vibranium the outside world saw is what Klaue stole.
Now, I can't watch the video, but even discounting the monarchy, the isolationism alone should heavily hamstring their economy. I guess you can handwave it as "their technology is so advanced that they don't need trade," but that feels weak.
But now that I think about it, they do have some trade. They're considered the poorest nation in the world, but they're not a failed state. The headscratchers page for the film theorizes that they use their vibranium technology to produce massive amounts of textiles in a snap, pretend it was difficult, and make a reasonable profit that way.
There's also the question of cultural imports. Shuri knows outsider memes, so does that mean that Wakanda imports the outside world's internet?

Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff. The headscratcher I've people say is Vibranium is their number one resource and it is specifically the single thing responsible for making the country among the richest in the world.
But they don't sell it, so how does that work? To use an analogy, it's like owning a diamond mine but not selling any diamonds.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."The Border Tribe has horses, which appear to be Basuto ponies
. They’re descended from Cape Horses brought to South Africa in 1653 and are commonly used by the Sotho people.
Wakanda most likely traded for them.

Vibranium technology makes them the richest in the world. Vibranium's rarity is by far its least valuable property.

Vibranium technology making better products. The value of a factory is not in selling its machines, it's in selling what the machines produce.
"Yes, our poor impoverished country managed to produce this mere billion dollars worth of textiles, definitely using every laborer in our country and not one small factory."
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.I know the conversation has already been started, but I'd prefer not to give that video any more views considering it was made by a bunch of Gina Carano apologists who publish articles like "These Parents and Teachers Have Had Enough of Woke Classrooms and Critical Race Theory" or takes like "the reason police brutality exists is because enforcing laws is inherently violent, so we should just have less laws and government to begin with."

It is a bit of a paradox how Wakanda can somehow seem poor enough convince the rest of the world that they are, yet actually be rich enough to eclipse the world, without actually trading with anyone and thus maintaining that poor facade.
However, it's worth noting that it's hardly the first time a fantasy kingdom has ignored how economy and international trade works, and it won't be the last.

A Wizard Did It, but replace "A Wizard" with "Vibranium".

Disgusted, but not surprisedThat said, I could've bought it if Vibranium made it such that nobody in Wakanda a) needs foreign commodities or b) needs an excessive amount of money to do things within Wakanda itself. I could absolutely buy that most things that cost a lot of money in the real world don't in Wakanda because Vibranum technobabble makes it easy to do. It's already clear that the nation's rural and agrarian population basically lives that way by choice.
The sticking point is T'Challa being able to roll up to a random street in Oakland and start buying buildings.
