Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

There's also the inconvenient bit about your school blowing up every other Tuesday.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonThere was a Normal Man on the X Men in Morrison’s Bad Future
I say normal but he really wanted to fuck robots
So I guess you can be a human X Men if you’re kinky enough
Forever liveblogging the AvengersNon-Marvel example of an enhanced human school
. I liked how the comic placed a greater focus on the organization's attendees who had no interest in being a superhero and were more focused on reintegrating with society.
Too bad there hasn't been an update for years...
Okay, this conversation is reminding me of that time Linkara acted out how Xavier would justify the school's budget:
Board of Directors: ... Actually, we were going to ask you about the vending machines and the nutrition of your students... Spinning wheel of death you say?
Some more What If? early promotion:
- Hayley Atwell confirming a "Summer 2021" release in a recent Instagram post
.
- More merchandise
showing zombie Captain America and "Party Thor".
Some discussion on the The Falcon and the Winter Soldier thread
thread about the MCU's history of ableism reminded me that I still really dislike Thor's physical and mental health in Endgame being a punchline. I probably shouldn't expect the MCU to be a shining paragon of fairness on this topic or anything, but making Thor's grief over seeing half of the survivors of his people get murdered by Thanos and co. the butt of jokes is just unpleasant to watch.
Some see it as a (relatively, too many fat jokes for my liking) positive portrayal because he still wound up being worthy of Mjolnir.
The Mary Sue even had a piece
that fat white nerds who feel represented with Thor might finally understand the desire for representation now.

I like the idea of Thor's character arc in Endgame, I just feel there needed to be a few little tweaks to help it come across better.
I don't mind the first few jokes when Thor first appears after the Time Skip, but I think they should've stopped once Thor reveals how devastated he truly is to Rocket and Bruce. You get your laughs, but you play it straight after Thor's facade slips.
I also kind of felt the scene where Rocket slaps Thor when he's in the middle of a anxiety attack was a big misstep for that subplot. I get it's supposed to be a dire situation, but it felt a little disrespectful considering what Thor had gone through. Maybe they could've done something a bit more similar to Clint's pep-talk to Wanda in AOU and have Rocket help him calm down or step aside?
Although, using real world logic, Thor was definitely not in the right mindspace to even go on the Time Heist in the first place and probably should've sit the whole thing out. But hey, what's the fun in that?
Then again, Rocket slapping Thor was rather in character for him.
Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.It felt very jarring to have a touching scene where Rhodey and Nebula connect over their own disabilities and accept to do what they can with what they’ve got, and then shortly after he and the others are back to making mocking jabs at Thor the resident punching bag.
There really was no reason for them to demand Thor to go on the Time Heist right away. Either take some time to get him therapy and help him to a better place where he might feel like joining the mission, or ask someone else like Valkyrie or Captain Marvel to take his place.

I guess I'm of two minds of this.
The more petty, dickish part of me wants to say that it's a complete irredeemable trainwreck of handling the character and his trauma and the people who genuinely like it are just blithering, privileged Marvel sycophants who lap of anything the franchise does and haven't undergone much if any real tragedy in their lives and these fans and the screenwriters should maybe kinda have a limb or two shorn off of their bodies just to know what it really feels like. Hell, I was actually initially gonna say only this.
But the more calmed-down part of me feels like there *are* elements to like about Thor here. I genuinely like the scene where he talks to Frigga, it's really touching and one of the few moments in the film that actually feels emotionally realized amongst the long string of fanservice over subtstance. Also I like how he's still holding his own in battle. There was potential here, there really was, and some of it does shine through at least a little. But it's hard not to see why people have issues with the execution.
Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)Thor suffering a breakdown was very understandable, especially after his talk with Rocket in IW. It probably could have been handled better (maybe closer to Tony's PTSD in Iron Man 3), but at least the idea was there. And it did not feel particularly cruel to me, considering the World of Snark Endgame was to begin with.
Also it allowed me to say that I have the body of a Thunder God.

Human students endure enough as it is at regular school, having normal students at a superhero academy would be horrible
