Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

They didn't do that before Civil War when they didn't have the movie rights to him, so there isn't much reason to fear that they would do it now.
Tom has one other MCU project besides No Way Home before the deal is fully done. I wonder what it will be?
Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadCool news with the Goldsberry casting.
My theory is that either Goldsberry or the previously announced Ginger Gonzaga will be playing Jazinda
.
I originally just thought casting Jazinda was a cool idea, but now it seems plausible, both based on the (admittedly very unsurprising) information that one or more actresses would be cast as a "gal pal" for Jennifer, and because of the increasing presence of Skrulls in the MCU.
Another Shang-Chi leak, though a minor one. Confirms a common fan theory people have had since the cast was announced
.

Yup. Knew it. Good to have confirmation, though. Again, though, they seem seriously against actually calling him the Mandarin. Is this to distance themselves even further from Iron Man 3 or something?
Geez, I hope not. The classic finger rings are much cooler.

Agree with you on that one. The Mandarin is supposed to have a cool, regal appearance and yet from what we've seen he's just gonna look like... some guy in a robe.

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonI will say that it's actually a nice contrast to Shang-Chi, who seems to have a stubble beard. Usually, the elder Asian has a beard and his younger heir is shaven-clean. But here, the roles are reversed. As for why the finger rings became arm rings, I presume it's to emphasize the Mandarin as Shang-Chi's main villain, being based more on martial arts rather than Science Versus Magic that was prevalent during his tenure as Iron Man's villain. Either that, or the classic Ten Rings look too much like the Infinity Stones. Either way, I can totally buy that this character is called The Mandarin without coming across as a lazy racial stereotype made during the 50s.

I looked it up a bit, and while Wenwu doesn't mean the same thing, the name does seems to be a reference to a bit of Chinese philosophy
that arguably hits the same "political balance and authority" idea that naming a character "The Mandarin" does.
Given that, I'd imagine the idea was to give the character a name that doesn't have the same stereotypical connotations as Mandarin does, but still has the same general implications.

A Beard of Evil is very common for Yellow Peril villains. This movie seems like its trying to avoid all the racism and stereotypes from the comics.
It depends on how the beard is done. Highly groomed, effete Wicked Cultured ones with a pencil mustache yes. A full-grown Badass Beard no, as the prevailing Asian stereotypes tend to go in the opposite drection where our men are seen as too effeminate and unmanly to be capable of it.

I dunno. Fin Fang Foom isn't really thematically in line with what Shang Chi is about. He's just an alien that vaguely looks like a Chinese dragon, and while he is connected to the backstory of the Mandarin's rings, ultimately he's more of an "conquering alien warlord" type. If you're keeping the "kung fu epic" genre for Shang Chi's movies, then Foom is a bit off genre.
If we got Foom in anything, I'd want it to be Guardians. Or, if they keep the tone they have been, one of the future Thor movies.
