Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

It can't be as bad as Mulan. I mean, you can't top (cultural) genocide apologetics.

x5 Xavier was also perfectly happy to make out with the empress of an enormous space empire
And Lilandra was better than Mad Emperor D'ken and Deathbird but no massive empire is good
And Xavier tacitly condoned that all on the lips

Forever liveblogging the Avengers"So what's the villain's deal?"
"Oh, you're going to love this. The villain... is EVIL."
"Wow, wow, wow."
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I’m going to be honest, I wouldn’t have greenlit it. Between obligatory CCCP appeasement, the inevitable complaints of Unfortunate Implications from a studio that really has issues with Asian representation, it feels like waddling into a minefield for no good reason. Mulan only heightened those concerns.

I think Shang-Chi is also a gigantic minefield with Marvel's bad track record with CCP appeasement (the Doctor Strange stuff is downright shameful). If Marvel had some guts it could be downright revolutionary, considering Shang-Chi (and the general Kung fu mystical side of Marvel as a whole) obviously harkens to the Hong Kong film school (more specifically, their Kung Fu films), and Hong Kong is currently being steamrolled by China. They could make something sticking up for Hong Kong, if they wanted since the elements are there (Hell, the villain is called The Mandarin, the very dialect trying to extinguish HK's Cantonese by blind accident).
But the odds of that are astronomically low.

And then Marvel went 'who is that?'

x3 - And his father was Fu Manchu!
To be fair, Jim Starlin had a My God, What Have I Done? moment after Larry Hama (at least that’s what the original article said) showed him a Fu Manchu novel and went “Dude, shit is racist.”

And in Quake's case, she wasn't Asian until the show.
I recall reading somewhere he'll have the power to make duplicates of himself. His Supernatural Martial Arts could also grant him other abilities.
Also, with Amadeus Cho's mother established in the MCU maybe we can get him in a future movie or show.
Speaking of Agents of Atlas, we've still got Jimmy Woo, who I think a spinoff is being penned for.
And if there isn't one, there should be, because I would just love to see more of this guy.

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonJimmy Woo is in fact one of the few asian superheroes in comics more or less wholly divorced from martial arts in the comics, being more of a James Bond type (so he's competent at martial arts in a general "super-spy" sense but he's not really a martial arts master). In the MCU he's even more divorced from martial arts by virtue of Adaptational Wimp (though still pretty good at hand-to-hand combat as Wandavision showed). Granted the MCU did change him from Chinese-American to Korean-American, but the latter are still associated with Taekwondo.

Watch him be Actor Grandmaster. Maybe he'll get to sing again?

I'd argue that's Marvel, needing the X-men to be like that.
But I suppose the difference is growing more and more academic as time goes on.
