Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Brubaker's Cap run still remains unmatched.

Since he left Cap has been written by Rick Remender, Nick Spencer, and Ta-Nehesi Coates, and none have reached the level of acclaim Brubaker had.

I feel bad for the guy. I wish he got more credit from the movies. Since his run has had a high influence on it.

Though I love how he acknowledges Stucky and seems okay with it. I like it when a creator is okay with shipping. Most creators who ignore shipping at best or make fun of it a worse. Looking at you cast of Supergirl. So it's a nice change of pace.

Made it to episode 7 of Wandavision. It's been Agatha all along! Really good take on the classic "innocent goofy friend character was actually the villain the whole time" twist.

The Wandavision thread is probably the better place to talk about spoilers from that show.

Yeah, alright. I wanted to avoid that thread to avoid spoiling myself, and I figured it would be okay if I said which episode I was on, and because I'm kind of a late watcher of the series.

Wow, I’m surprised she’s getting a spinoff before her debut.

They prolly figured having a deaf superhero is something you can’t not make the star of a show.

And I can’t disagree.

Clint Barton’s deafness plays a key part in Fractions’s run, so if they can’t adapt that in the Hawkeye show then doing so through Echo’s could be an interesting concession.

I assume it's partly because they are impressed enough by her performance in whatever they've filmed of Hawkeye so far.

It might also be a bit of a quasi-Hawkeye Season 2. My impression is that all of the MCU Disney+ shows will be written as self-contained stories that don't really lend themselves to a season 2 like a traditional broadcast show would. However in the long run it will necessary to revisit some of the older characters and make shows that are sequels of a kind.

Yeah, that makes sense. For a shared universe with so many interesting characters, just moving onto a different one makes sense. It is still a bit weird to greenlight it before Hawkeye's actually released, but I've seen shows get a second season ordered the same way, and it's not too different to that.

To be clear, if they are doing an Echo series I expect it to be an Echo series first and foremost, but it could easily have some connecting threads to the Hawkeye series beyond Echo herself (and her father, who apparently also appears in Hawkeye).

Basically if Kate Bishop pops up in the Echo series, I'm not going to be surprised.

Considering that we have not had movies for almost two years, I am happy to have these series.

I'm reminded that Echo has had interactions with Moon Knight and Daredevil, being a romantic interest for the latter even.

Wonder if they might ever do something with that.

She also had ties to Kingpin, though who knows if they'll keep that in the MCU.

Doubtful unless they have some plan for Daredevil again or something soon, since making him play with Peter feels really unlikely by now.

It is a bit interesting that we haven't gotten a big "supervillain organized crime" character yet, though I guess it cam be explained by us simply not having a character whose focus was on that sort of thing yet.

The closest we've gotten is Vulture, as an arms dealer who specifically trades in supertech - but even then, Vulture was apparently pretty small time.

It's the kind of thing I'm looking forward to seeing in Armor Wars, but in the films I could see, say, Black Panther taking on a mastermind smuggler of Wakandan tech, or Ant-Man taking on the Maggia, or - heck - bringing back a throwback and having Spidey take on the Big Man, though.

Black Widow's getting a simul-release in theaters and Disney+ (through Premier Access) on July 9th, according to the official Marvel Studios Twitter.

If the pricing's the same as Mulan (2020) and Raya and the Last Dragon, then get your additional $30 dollars ready.

Disney throwing in the towel.

Not only is Black Widow being delayed to July 9, it's also getting Premiere Access'd on D+.

The layoffs at Marvel Studios, and potentially all of Disney Studios, will be catastrophic. It'll be a miracle if Feige makes it through 2021.

Feige lobbied heavily against the dual release. There's no way this was made with his approval.

No one on the creative team has anything to do with distribution. Why would Feige be in any danger?
