Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Yeah, I actually Disney is/was waiting to be able to put "Academy Award Winner Chloe Zhao" before going full steam ahead with Eternals marketing. Like Zombieland 2 but unironic
. They might downplay that for the international trailer, though.

Watching through Wandavision and I'm on episode 5, re-cast Pietro has just been introduced. I see now why I heard some outrage about X-Men and the multiverse not being introduced in this show. Seems kinda silly to expect that, though, as early as episode 3 or 4 it was obvious to me that this show is a small-scale personal story about Wanda getting over her trauma and grief, not a large-scale story with world-ending stakes. I don't know why anyone expected the world of the MCU to change dramatically with this show when that's clearly not what it's about.
It's great so far, though.
It's a combination of factors:
1. We know the X-Men/Mutants are in the pipeline, so they'll be coming sooner or later. 2. There is the nontrivial question of how to integrate mutants into the setting. 3. Wanda is heavily tied to the metanarrative of mutants in the comics, so it's not a huge leap to believe she could be tied to their emergence in the MCU.
That all being said, in retrospect the the text of the show never actually supported the idea of "Pietro" being anything other than a casting gag from literally the moment he was introduced. Likewise the multiverse and mutants are bigger concepts then can reasonably be squeezed into the last third of a show.
I suppose Wanda could still end up connected to the emergence of mutants in the MCU, but that will have to wait for Multiverse of Madness.
I don't think Multiverse of Madness will have anything to do whatsoever with the actual multiverse, given that the stated plot is about the Dream Dimension. "Multiverse" is probably just being used as a general term for "multiple universes", and Dr. Strange is going to be going around to multiple different dimensions and interacting with alien cultures and eldritch horrors during the course of the film.
I don't think they're going to introduce any mutants at all until they actually get to the first X-Men movie, or maybe in F4, but even that's still a toss-up. And the way they're going to introduce the mutants is probably just going to be a low-key "they've existed on Earth all this time, they've just avoided detection until now via low numbers".
I don’t think this Wanda should be a mutant
I feel a sufficient explanation was already given in Wandavision
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI pointed out earlier X-Men has a gimmick where mutats have been here for pretty much forever but the number of mutants radically shot up after the invention, usage and testing of nuclear weaponry in the 40's-50's (hence, "Children of the Atom"). You could have that but with the usage of the Infinity Stones on Earth rather than nuclear weaponry, with their number radically shooting up with The Snap.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."In recent comics marvel apparently mutants predate Homo sapiens by going all the way back to one million bc

Not for her brother though amusingly enough.
If Wanda gained powers due to her innate witchness then how did Pietro gain powers?
Whether Wanda becomes a Mutant or not is dependent on what she’s gonna do after Doc Strange 2 I guess.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."It just seems silly to me that people expected something of this show that it clearly wasn't going to deliver on, like they were more invested in what Wandavision could mean for the future of the MCU than actually enjoying the present story about Wanda and Vision. Which I've been having a blast with, so far. I've wanted Wanda to get her own movie since Age of Ultron, and she's my favorite female hero in the MCU, so I've been looking forward to seeing her get a story just for her own sake. Vision is cool, too, he makes for a good secondary main character, but I'm mainly here for Wanda.
I'm also glad that her show technically came out before Black Widow's movie, because I've always felt Scarlet Johansson in the role was mediocre and wooden, and did not make for a good sole female representative among the MCU's superheroes.

I admit I have always been annoyed how Widow tends to be the constant sole female member over Wasp or Wanda.
Like no offense to Nat but I’ve always found her and Clint make for a redundant duo if the team is rather small.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."If I had to pick between the two of them, I'm glad Hawkeye was the one who survived Endgame. I always preferred him out of the two, he had a more interesting fighting style and a more dynamic personality. Everything else was about equal, and I'm still hyped to see the Black Widow movie, I'm just comparatively more hyped to see the Hawkeye show.
While neither of them had good arcs, especially compared to the other founding Avengers, Endgame at least came up with a good point for Clint to go through that makes me want to see how his family deals with him being an edgy assassin for half a decade. Natasha's only ever been good in my opinion in Winter Soldier, and that's just because Winter Soldier's arguably the best in the MCU when it comes to writing.
The legend has returned.Re: Pietro's powers, I assumed they left it unexplained in case the twins get mutantified down the line (doubt it), but it is possible she subconsciously cast another spell to keep him alive. Where the super speed in particular came from is anyone's guess.
It helped that Johansson and Evans are longtime friends, so their characters' friendship is actually compelling on top of the good writing.
I don't think Hawkeye was ever used well, really, so I was one of those who balked when he died and she didn't; first his family then his edgy assassin thing felt inserted into the Blockbuster Of The Year to give him stuff to do. The Hawkeye show will hopefully be better on that front.

What's that? An MCU property met with near-universal acclaim? Color me shocked.
I am probably the only person in this thread that has actually watched Helstrom in its entirety. The show is amazingly obscure for a (obstensively) marvel property.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."

The film it's pretty much done though. It's practically collecting dust waiting to be released, no way they can sack her since, well, her job is done.
You also have to consider that she's a frontrunner to swipe the Oscars. Not even Disney would like to undermine her presence just when she will probably be a big name after the event, at least to countries outside of China.
