Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Another random theory about Falcon & Winter Soldier.
The first episode will have the "we're not a team, we're not friends, we're coworkers" chat between them. The last episode will have the same chat, but it will be "we're not a team, we're not friends, we're brothers" in that feel-good, schmaltzy way.

I had an idea for the Carnage symbiote and introducing Norman Osborn.
- Norman Osborn is performing lethal human experiments and using homeless people as disposable bodies.
- Cletus Kassidy is some guy from the south in New York on business who gets framed for the murders.
- Osborn wants something test the results of all his human experimentation on and also wants a stooge. He offers Cletus, who doesn't know Osborn is responsible for his situation, a way out and a way to take revenge on the "unjust system that put the blame on a good ol' boy like you".
- The human experimentation had something to do with the Venom symbiote which had to have appeared by now, I guess. The result is the Carnage symbiote, which is attached to Cletus.
- Cletus Kassidy seems intelligent and like he believes that he is a noble rebel fighting against an oppressive system, but actually he's just been fed bullshit by men like Norman Osborn. In contrast to Cletus, Carnage is just having fun wrecking shit.

The venom movie was actually successful so Sony probably won’t let marvel play with symbiotes
Forever liveblogging the Avengers![]()
I dunno, half the fun of Carnage is that he isn't particularly sympathetic or misled. He's just a monstrous symbiote and an even more monstrous serial killer who get along like two peas in a pod and are bonded together into a murder machine.
A couple themes and idea came about from the idea.
One was a Trope Talk about how like, Thanos has this high ideal going on but also kinda seems like he's enjoying his job too much? And there was a reason they did that, because it was more fun to watch, even if detracted from the character.
And I thought, "The symbiotes would be perfect for that. You have whoever's in the suit be the noble, well-intentioned anti-villain and the suit can be the jovial dragon riding shotgun." Eddie and Venom might be perfect for that by themselves, though.
Second, however, and why I picked Cletus, is for the political statements, which Marvel is no stranger to. The powerful rich man convincing the bereft poor man that he has the answers to his problems when he is, in fact, the cause of them. Framing Cletus for serial murder lets me tie into his comic book origins with a twist. Also, Cletus sounds super Southern, so...

Making Carnage an unfortunate victim of circumstance is completely missing the point of his character.
To quote a certain FBI agent, "Some killers are projects of society. Some act out past abuses. __ kills because he likes it."
Also, making Cletus the kind of dim-witted Southerner taken advantage of by a corrupt Yankee is a little...stereotypical and slightly offensive.

Carnage himself put it all perfectly what hes about in Absolute Carnage.

"Did you know that my mother went through electroshock treatments when she was pregnant with me? This was before they would sedate you for that kind of thing… and then you know… I died minutes after I was born… went to hell… came back… that’s a whole thing.
I’ve had therapists try to tel me that these “early traumas” led to me being.. the way I am. I’ve heard it all you know… I’m this way because of abuse, because of video games, or sex and violence on tv, because of guns and knives and the wickedness of this mean old world. But what none of them get… is those things didn’t make me what I am. I am made… of them. I am abuse. I am sex and violence. I am the guns and the knives and the wickedness of this whole sick @#$%#&% world…
You know my name… Now scream it."

That trailer does make it look like the series is going to be Winter Soldier as a whole series, which could be very cool if it's as smartly written as that film was. Looking at Kolstad's previous record, aside from John Wick most of his films are considered on the good side of serviceable, but not that much better. So while I expect the action to be great, I'm still concerned about whether it'll be up to snuff with the better Netflix series in terms of commentary.
Also, while Markus and Mc Feely have had some bizarre takes on the characters (specific examples include some really headscratching ones regarding attribution of guilt as well as some concerning ableism in particular), they did have a particular way with characterization-rich dialogue that could be witty without being overly quippy. I'm wondering if Kolstad can also maintain that.

Secret Invasion casts Kingsley Ben-Adir (Malcolm X from One Night in Miami) as a secret bad guy...

That's my point, your whole idea seems to be based on and leaning into some pretty tired, offensive stereotypes. In addition to missing the whole point of Carnage's character in the first place.
But, as others have pointed out, its a very moot point anyway because there's very little chance we'll see Carnage in the MCU proper, as I imagine Sony would rather hold onto him.

I have no idea about earlier comics, but I'm fairly sure Cletus had a Southern accent in the 90's cartoon and I definitely recall him being Southern in that recentish Inversion series. And like he's played by Woody Haralson in the upcoming Sony movie, right? So, I don't think it's off-base to assume he's Southern.
However, I think it's a pretty bad idea for the story to be about him as this noble "white working class guy" being mislead by evil city folk, especially because Cletus is most-well known for being a gleefully unrepentant Serial Killer. It's like the premise of Joker but more "extreme".
A sort-of sequel to the Xbox commercial featuring Sam!

Flash's veteran story is one of those things that never gets into adapations because it requires more time to pass then adaptations usually allow.
