Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Basically, the "Carol Cadets" (or Kid Gestapo, as I like to call them) were shown breaking into a teenagers home, forcefully arrested him (again, based on a vision) and one of them, Becky St. Jude, the most rabid member (who thankfully later became a villain) basically laughed off his protests and demanding a lawyer and even tasered him in front of his horrified parents.

Kamala was the official leader of the Carol Cadets. All the violation of civil rights occurred against her desires and she disbanded them when it became clear they had gone too far. This really can't be put on Carol since she did not form the Carol Cadets to do this.

Arresting people without any kind of trial or legal basis solely due to visions is pretty fascist I'd say.

No arguments here. But at least she didn't violate the DNA of a dead superhero, try to arrest people for speaking out against a law that wasn't even made legal yet or sick murderous supervillains on people.

Honestly, the biggest problem with Civil War is how they tried to make using precogs a controversial action. Several superheroes have relied on precogs or people with some kind of knowledge of the future. The X-Men alone have three characters like this and Tony even did similar things when was running Force Works.

Trying to use Precogs as a legal basis to mass arrest people is the problem here.

Also, just because somebody did the wrong thing in the past as well doesn't make this right.

That's like saying 'The Punisher is justified in killing people because Wolverine does it too.'

About Carol calling a Holocaust survivor a Godwin's Law troll: I would not be surprised if she was on Magneto's shit list until the end of time for saying that.

"Acting upon Ulysses' visions can prevent disasters and save lives" and "Arresting someone who literally has done nothing wrong is completely unethical and unlawful" are both totally valid not contradictory points, but the Conflict Ball won't let Carol and Tony reach a simple peaceful agreement.

Both of the Civil War events in the comics were contrived bullshit excuses to have superheroes fight each other.

I still find the comparison to Ulysses' power to profiling cringey as hell.

Back when the first Civil War comics came out, they did sell fairly well.

The Civil War II comics also sold fairly well, though the sales for later issues dwindled.

Comic Events were one of the main reasons I stopped reading comics.

The first Civil War was at least rooted in the tensions that had always existed between Marvel superheroes and civilians. Plus it did have a lasting impact on the MU (both good and bad) in real time and some of the status quo changes produced some good stories.

Very little good came out of Civil War 2 and Marvel began undoing most of the developments that came out of it almost immediately afterwards. They didn't even bother letting Ulysses stick around after the event ended.

I think we call agree that no matter what our thoughts are on the heroes's actions in Captain America: Civil War, they at least didn't sink as low as their comic counterparts did.

Although I have a pretty good feeling Civil War II wouldn't have been made had it not been for the film. Brand synergy and all that.

Both Marvels Ultimate Alliance 2 and Captain America 3 were perfect examples of adaptations being superior to a source material.

Probably Dr. Strange or T'Challa.

These 2, alongside Carol, seem to be the new "Big 3" of the MCU.

After? He didn’t even make it through the event.

The conflict really ends because Ulysses is whisked off into space, making the entire thing absolutely pointless

I think the premise of the first one was at least more worthy of debate. Tony and Steve's positions were harder to reconcile.

Civil War 1 if there had been no Conflict Ball:

Tony: "I think that regulating the actions of super heroes could help insure that the world is defended by people who are all qualified to deal with the threats they face and accountable for the damage they might cause."

Steve: "Well I think that regulating the actions of super heroes would restrict us and create scenarios where heroes aren't allowed to act fast enough to save people. Furthermore, an overly draconian law could take away our basic freedoms and treat people who are going out of their way to help others as if they are criminals."

Tony: "While your concerns are understandable, Captain, I stand by my belief that the Superhuman Registration Act will be beneficial overall. I am working alongside the Act specifically to prevent it from harming the super hero community, that's literally my whole motivation here, so rest assured that I will not allow superheroes to be treated like criminals."

Steve: "With all due respect, you have not swayed me, Tony. I will continue to protest the Act as is my right as an American!"

Civil War 2 if there had been no Conflict Ball:

Carol: "With the help of Ulysses we can learn about crimes before they even happen and totally prevent them."

Tony: "But Carol, we don't even know how Ulysses' abilities work, as reliable as they have been so far they can never be considered proof of someone's intent to commit a crime."

Carol: "Yes, I will keep this in mind when I act upon these premonitions and I will not arrest people without tangible evidence of criminal activity."

Tony: "Good, I shall study Ulysses' abilities so that we can all understand them better, while you act to prevent any disasters he foresees."

The ghost should have been up once one of his predictions came up false. There were at least two blatantly false predictions that I recall. Because Luke Cage sure didnt kill anyone and the suitcase bomb was just an empty suitcase.

But why was it completely empty? Who carries a completely empty suitcase?

Criminals, probably.
