(however, I'm forced to wonder how minority fans would react if, say, Power Man was revamped into a white guy
I wouldn't mind that. Of course, I've never liked the character. I'd like it if they'd replace him with a black guy who isn't an ex-con and hasn't been a walking stereotype for most of his career, but a white guy would get rid of that stuff just as easily.

— not entirely the same thing in it's implications, but still, this is more about how people feel about it, a character of their own race bein turned into a character of another race)
I think the Spider-Man thing is specifically about a character of the majority race being turned into a minority.

@ captainpat: I understood NUL Lc Hi LD 27 post as saying that it was marketing departament's decision that was infulenced by Glover, not Bendis'.

[up] You know that currently Luke Cage is no longer using Power Man nickname, right? Some kid that pooped out during Shadowland does.

[up]Nah I meant Bendis.

[up][up][up]Oh god, I hope so. And Batman can be replaced by a Palestinian/Polish film buff and fall through a time rift, end up in the Ultimate Spider-Man universe and fight crime together [lol]

lol.

[up][up] Oh sorry my post was in response to NUL Lc Hi LD 27 (fuck these arrows)

Anyway, I will say it's about time we had a proper ultimate spider-man suit, correct me if I'm wrong but Peter was the only hero whose costume was a copy of his 616 counterpart.

Like what?

Capt in Ultimatum

616 Capt

What difference?

EDIT: Okay, there's the tiny stars on his shoulders. These are neither practical nor numerous.

  1. Gloves are less gaudy and more practical.
  2. No wings on cowl.
  3. Boots aren't "buccaneer" style.
  4. If I remember correctly, the whole "pouches and belts" motif (like real soldiers) started with Ultimate Cap, although I could be wrong.

Just so I'm clear, Ultimate Spider-Man's Peter Parker died. Does that mean Peter as a whole is dead? Like, is there a Peter in Amazing Spider-Man that's just chilling?

616-verse Peter is fine and dandy.

Ultimate Spider-Man's Peter is dead. Amazing Spider-Man's Peter is alive.

If that's the Power Man that Gray64 was talking about, I could not care less how they revamp him.

I don't see what the big deal about this thing is. Okay, Peter's dead. That's sad. But just because he's dead on gone doesn't mean the identity has to go with him. Besides this is the Ultimate universe, which was meant to be a renovated version of the mainstream line. Many of the characters are starting to get replaced with different people and races to boot. Have we forgot about Nick-motherfuckin'-Fury and The Hulk (who took the serum before Banner and became a cartel boss). If this were the classic 616 canon and Petey met his maker (for good), then maybe it'd be a reason to overreact.

And why is everyone acting like this is new? Yeah most of the incarnations are basically Peter Parker, but there is one guy that took the mantle in a different timeline. Have we forgotten about Miguel O'hara? The guy who's half-Latino and half-Irish? The guy became an intergalactic ruler.

To me, what matters is whether or not the story is well written. If the character has depth, traits that make him stand out (other than ethnicity), and a good backstory and plotline, that's cool. But if it's nothing but the same thing but with a color swap, it's a turn off. If it's a jaunt poking fun at his race and using his powers for simple tricks, making the whole thing an old Mencia or Chappelle joke (or an early Power Man comic), then it's a waste.

[up] You brought up OMD bit not the clone saga? He basically saying that big change ups in spider-man stories have rarely turned out well is what he's saying. Still relevant, I suggest you try actually reading the post.

The idea of a Spider-Man of ethnic origins isn't a new one within the Marvel halls. It's come up over the years, over the course of many creative summits, as well as in smaller editorial meetings. The problem was that the timing wasn't right, it didn't feel organic.

So much for this being "totally Bendis's idea".

AirofMystery Since: Jan, 2001

Because white people don't have ethnicities! We just spring, fully formed, from the ground! We must be the default, and everyone else is the variation on the all-pervading whiteness!

...not Quesada's fault. I just think 'ethnic Spiderman' is a bad way to put it, considering Peter Parker had an ethnicity, Wolverine has an ethnicity, everybody in Marvel Comics has an ethnicity. It's not something that magically only occurs in Luke Cage, or something.

Couldn't they have just gone with ultimate Spidey's female clone instead?
