What is it that makes a film a cult classic? I'm not asking what it is about a movie that makes it a cult classic but what defines a film as cult classic?

[up]Generally it's a film that doesn't have a lot of mainstream recognition but the fans it does have are very vocal/active. At least that's how I always saw it.

[up]The Big Lebowski will like to prove that wrong
my definition of a cult classic is basically anything with a cult following

This level of trolling is reasonable for Commander Obvious. What do you think of this, everyone?

[up]Doesn't everything have a cult following to some degree though? Maybe you could say it has no fans outside this cult following.

I think a cult classic is a film that would've been forgotten about almost immediately if not for the cult it's amassed keeping it alive, and being vocal enough about it to the point where even the mainstram admits that it's a classic.

In short: A film that only lasts long enough to be considered a classic because of the cult that it has supporting it

[up][up]its primarily based on the fanbase and their actions
you dont see people reenacting Bridesmaids or dress up in their favorite character

We should, shouldn't we? wink

Any way, I think that page has a pretty good definition: "Rather than receiving a short but large burst of popularity before ultimately fading completely into obscurity, cult classics receive a marginal amount of attention almost indefinitely".

Wow, Pong is listed as a cult classic on our page.

I'm removing that. It's like calling King Kong one.

I could see Pong as one. It's been played ever since it was first made. Everyone's played Pong. But, then again, I very much doubt that there is a devoted fanbase for it.

Bruce Campbell described it like this: "Mainstream film: A film 10,000 people see 10 times. Cult film: A film 10 people have seen 10,000 times."

Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the Great
