Have it flag anything pointing at the same trope. But stack the problem list.
Fight smart, not fair. And it would stop people trying to rush the TRS when we do get through the back log as well as provides incentive for people to contribute. The sooner that they help close other threads, the sooner we'll get to the issues they want dealt with.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickAppreciate the recap a bunch, blackcat. Thanks!
'Queue' would mean a thread that has an OP, but cannot be replied to until the magic 1000 boundary is crossed. I think it would be simpler for people to use the To Do List feature to store their notes about issues they happen across.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyCan the "find post by troper" function be tweaked to go back further in time than it currently does? I don't use the thread watchlist function enough and I'm not positive there aren't threads I've posted in that I've forgotten about.
Also, I don't think a queue will be sufficient to really have the end effect of depleting the number of stuck threads, it will instead keep at at whatever number the cap is at. An alternate idea: After each cap is met, have a couple weeks where new threads are permitted, then cap it again, but Moving the Goalposts down to a lower number. Repeat when the new goal is met. Re-evaluate plan when a significant percent of the backlog, say 75%, is cleared.

I had just logged on to make a similar suggestion. We want to reduce the backlog and keep the number of open threads manageable. At the same time we don't want to create a competition for getting a thread in. I keep thinking about how locks work when boats want to get from the Chicago River to Lake Michigan.
I had an idea, not sure related to what, but if tropers can tag articles that they personally think need some kind of cleanup (like via the to-do list), then somebody can generate a report about which articles have the most to-dos attached to them, flagging them as possible candidates for TRS'ing.
An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.The more I thought about that, the more I realized that a huge part of the problem wasn't the number of open threads, it was that as a thread gets older without action it gets buried in a mass of locked threads. So I passed the suggestion on to the Fast One and he whipped up a widget that automagically moves any thread that's locked in TRS or IP to the morgue (in the "Locked threads" section far lower right.
It won't actually reduce the backlog itself, but it makes it much clearer how bad it really is. (Or isn't, as the case may be.)
If you have a reason to want an old thread unlocked, hit the holler button on a post in it and ask for it to be unlocked and moved back to active status. Explain why!

Queueing does sound like a plan.
