After looking at the mask confusingly, Guilmon decided to put it on his face. Its shaped changed to the new face he had in this world.

Luckily, Fluttershy saw the sword incoming a screeched to a halt a inch before hitting the sword. She plopped down onto the ground like a rock in front of the samurai. "Um, sorry," she apologized, getting back up and slowly backing away from Ranmaru.

Leo took one look at the masks and sighed internally. This was probably the 8th or 9th time he'd done this today.

They certainly won't win points with any fashionistas out there...but, if they're effective.

"We'll take them. Thanks." Leo briefly expressed his gratitude towards Stalgrim.

"Anything else you'd like to let us know?"

"Does the flying yellow and pink pony usually have panic attacks? They're gonna think she's a basket case."
Thinking on that, Johnny pulled a book out of his back pocket and wrote something down, before returning it.

"I'm not too sure... That's something to ask Fluttershy..." Shotaro said to Johnny. He then glared to Ranmaru.

"What the heck was that back there? You did realize you were about to cleave right through her, right?" Shotaro asked him.

Luigi was about to grab his mask, when Fluttershy's yells made him fall on his back. "Wah!" He yelled, before getting back up on his feet. "What's a-matter with her?"

Near the gate — Ranmaru Apologizes a Lot

Ranmaru returned Iron Vengeance to its sheath and bowed his head. “I offer my sincere apologies,” he said, “and I certainly meant to do no such thing.” He raised his head and looked Shotaro in the eyes. “Usually, when things are headed in high speed toward my head, they do so because someone thinks my death is desirable and manipulates the environment toward that end. I apologise again, for I have meant no harm.” He bowed again.

— Saren's helm nodded, the blue eyes behind the visor crinkled in amusement. Jack was one of the few humans that he had a continuing respect for. Mainly because both times Saren had become violent in his presence, the Samurai had appealed to him with reason (and the threat of his sword) and not through morality or emotionality —

" I haven't felt better, Samurai. I look forward to the opportunity to use my skills... You must feel more at home here."

— A piping young voice reached his ears, and he looked down to spy a young human boy. His eyes narrowed an increment. What is a little one doing here, on this little caravan?

Saren folded his arms. —

" Never seen something as... -alien- as myself, have you? I am Saren Arterius, of the Turian species, and wanderer of the cosmos. Do you belong to this world, boy?"

— Once at the gate, Saren swept his gaze over the battlements, and over those who had arrived before them. The Turian released a faint snort on observing their various shenanigans. If this was a Nomad-picked group of wanderers, then why did they bring in a timid toy pony? Maybe she was of use in negotiations and scouting, but Saren couldn't think of much other use for her.

He listened carefully to the local officer's briefing, already aware which part of the conflict he could serve best in... yet at the same time, merely gunning down lurching revenants would be no real challenge. He would instead find the source of the toxins, where ever that was, and eliminate it. No repetition necessary.

When they began passing around the masks, Saren took one... and promptly pocketed it, making sure that his helmet was secure about his head and face.

A squeal from above brought his attention, and once again it beggared his understanding as to why the pony was here. Since he was in a good mood, however...

"Fluttershy.

—He ground out the word in a raised voice, disliking the name's taste. He beckoned with a talon. —

"He could not know it. For it was not all a joke."

Outside the Gate

If he had enough of a face to do so then, Proto Man would have smiled at Ranmaru, Sayaka and Sazh's willingness to step up and help these people with their current plights. Their enthusiasm was quite admirable, though whether or not they'd actually be able to get things done effectively was another thing. The Robot Master silently resolved to pitch in however he could, not wanting to pipe up and draw attention to himself lest he look like some kind of hero or something. That was a job meant for those nobler than him.

Obediently stepping forward when the guy in charge, apparently named Stalgrim, beckoned, he looked the box of masks over curiously. Normally he would chalk claims of magical protection from illness up to superstition, but with all he had seen and experienced over such a short time, this seemed like small potatoes. "Hey, you might already know," he spoke to the hooded figure holding the box, "but I won't be needing one of those. I'm made of metal, so I can't get sick."

He then glanced over his shoulder at the commotion with the weird little flying horse, seeing her almost run into Ranmaru's sword after being spooked. Someone needs to keep an eye on her... he thought to himself, arms folded.

Outside the City Walls, South Gate

“So I see,” the hooded figure said dryly. “And naturally, the same is true of your Warforged companion. It is curious that an iron golem such as you can talk, and that you are so short…but then, the same can be said of your Pegasus as well.”

“Well, that’s the thing,” Sazh said to Edward. “He didn’t. Accordin’ to him, we all got yanked inta this mess by that Omega guy; the old man’s got no control over who comes an’ who goes.”

He started to look around for Selim…but that’s when the kerfuffle happened. Sazh could only stare at what happened between Ranmaru and Fluttershy in bemusement. “Okaaaay…somebody wanna tell me why the flyin’ horse is spazzin’ out?”

Stalgrim’s brows drew together as he observed this altercation. “You’re not inspiring much confidence, Pegasus,” he said with a sigh. The captain first pointed to Guilmon, then to the wagon’s driver. “These men are not dragons. They are lizardfolk, something completely different; they have about as much in common with dragons as I have with you. A true dragon would be at least five times their size, walking on all fours, and sporting a pair of wings.”

He turned to face Leo then. “The plague itself is not entirely natural,” he explained. “It is not easily cured even with healing magic; our best scholars claim that it actively resists attempts to remove it. It came to our city through the now-tainted waters of the river Brandt, which flows from the Marshes of Ia-Kong to the west.” Stalgrim pointed in that direction, indicating that sinister jungle off in the distance with crumbling ruins poking above its canopy. “The source of the corruption doubtless comes from there, but I should warn you—the marshes are extremely dangerous. Those who enter them seldom return, no matter how well-equipped or experienced they are; those few that do never speak of what they encountered.” The half-orc fixed Leo with a serious gaze. “If you go in there, you had best do so prepared; otherwise you will never come out.”

By this point the massive gate had finished swinging open, giving the Champions their first look at what lay within the walls of Riverrock. A broad cobblestone street, thirty feet wide and hundreds of feet in length, ran from the gatehouse towards the distant center of the city with its gleaming towers of gold and silver. It was lined on either side by slant-roofed, wooden-walled buildings of varying heights, all of them sharing an architectural style markedly different from the towers the Champions had glimpsed from atop that grassy knoll; those familiar with Earth and its cultures might recognize the style of these buildings as being vaguely like those of certain historical Asian cultures, like feudal Japan or ancient China. Few people were about, and of those that were most seemed to be lizardfolk.

“This is Riverrock’s foreign district,” Stalgrim explained. “It is one of nine that make up the city.” He turned and began to walk through the gate; Sazh, after taking a moment to don his own mask, followed after him.

As he followed the Captain of the City Watch, Sazh found himself frowning. “Hey, how come you’re not wearin’ a mask?” he asked pointedly, his voice muffled.

Stalgrim did not slow down as he answered. “As a paladin, I am empowered by my faith in Vyraiah the Ivory Queen; one of her blessings is an immunity to any and all forms of disease, even those of a magical or supernatural nature. Simply put, I can’t get sick.” He paused for a moment. “I also have the power to remove sickness, but my ability to use it is…somewhat limited,” he added morosely. “I can only use this gift five times in a week, and it can only affect as many people as I can touch. It has made some small amount of difference, but…not enough. Not nearly enough…”

Fluttershy was about to go over to Saren when he addressed him, but then Stalim explained the difference between lizard folk and dragons. She was a bit more respective this time due to no longer freakin' out. The pegasus started blushing.

"Um, well, you.....I....they look like teenaged dragons, and......I thought.......uh......." The pony tried to explain her freak outs, but trailed off due to sheer humiliation. She just took a mask to completely her cover face.

As the group entered the city proper, Fluttershy marveled at the architecture. The buildings in this particular part of the city reminded her heavily of the images and stories of Neighpon that she had heard about. She always wanted to go there someday, especially to see all the wondrous exotic critters there.

Stalim then mentioned he actually had healing abilities, but were very limited.

"Um, I can help," Fluttershy said to the City Watch Capt. "I have healing magic of my own. I don't really know if they can help against disease, but I am willing to try."

It seemed as if the big scary guy had decided that they were worth a try. Sayaka breathed a sigh of relief that they had been accepted without much ado. The opening of the gates was quite impressive and Sayaka wondered just How they got that gate to open- surely they were in for and adventure here.

It was rather exciting.

Then a man came out all in robes and presented them with strange masks. Apparently they were enchanted so that when wearing them, they couldn't catch the disease. Sayaka's eyes sparkled as she took one and placed it over her nose and mouth and to her wonder the mask molded itself to suit her facial shape.

This was really cool. Sayaka wished that she had Madoka here to talk to.

Then there was a scream and Sayaka turned round only to see that strange flying pony narrowly avoid getting sliced apart by a fellow champion. The red lizard thing was standing there with a rather embarrassed expression (apparently he had caused it but how Sayaka had no idea),there was a Japanese man gesticulating in the warrior's face- something about being more aware....

This was going to be a real party.

When the gates opened Sayaka's eyes widened.

wooow

It was certainly impressive but right now, most things were. Sayaka was finally understanding the excitement of not being in your own world.

That was when the talk turned to healing- the pony could heal apparently.

"I-I can heal people as well...I think.."

The last part was an after thought- her magic had only ever healed physical wounds like gaping cuts and broken ribs, she wasn't sure if she could but then...it was worth a try. The other choice was the marshes of 'La-Kong' and they did not sound inviting, however- she was a magical girl who had good combat capabilities and going into the marches wasn't out of the question. right now, with her new found wonder and her current resolve, Sayaka thought herself up to anything.

"It is more familiar to me than many places we have been," Jack agreed with Saren. "But," he went on, as much sadness upon his face as he would ever let himself show before comrades, "It is not my home." A smile returned to his features as he swung down off his horse. The weight of his armor sent a jolt through him as he hit the ground, and he knew the walk would be more tiring, but he had never been comfortable conducting conversations or seeing new lands from on high. He wished to walk beside his friends.

As the alien crooked a finger at the Pegasus, a slight frown appeared on the samurai's face, for he knew of Saren's thoughts and how they could at times be quite callous.

"She is a kind soul who has already endured a great deal of cruelty among us and where we travel," he warned sternly. "If nothing else, speak only what is needful. It may be her magic will aid us in the challenges ahead."

Then, donning the mask given him - perhaps his new appearance ran deeper than he thought, but he preferred not to risk it - Jack took his mount's reins and began walking into the city with the rest of the champions. As he walked, he listened to Stalgrim speak more of his city and Jack grew thoughtful.

"I am sorry," he said, bowing his head briefly as the tusked warrior spoke of the dying. Jack himself had seen such things, and been at just as much of a loss as to helping anyone. "I have wished, many times, that I had some form of sorcery to heal those in need."

But his mind turned to more immediate and practical matters, as it must, matters that could be solved by him and his sword.

"Yeah, sorry about that." Edward said, putting on his mask. "Fluttershy's a bit of a scaredy cat. Maybe she should, you know," He lowered one eyebrow, glancing at the pony. "Try to understand the situation instead of running away at the mere sight of something she deems scary?" He then sent the same glance towards Ranmaru. "Why would anyone try to attack you right now? You're surrounded by allies!"

The city's architecture was impressive, yes, but Edward was trying to pin down at what point in time would these people be. Might be nice to figure out if they're at the point when things like automails won't be considered evil magic. It looked Xingese... but then again, Edward had never went to Xing, just read about it on the books. That was the only two things the books back home had about Xing: it's a weird place and their royalty is weird.

Their royalty also likes to eat a lot.

Yeah. They also like to eat a lot. Before Edward could wonder just where the hell did that comment come from, a girl started talking about healing magic. "It's nice all of you can do that," He said to Sayaka and Fluttershy. "But healing people is just a temporary solution. We have to get rid of this plague, and then we can heal people without worrying they might get sick again."

"Nope!" Pride responded, wondering what the hell a Turian was and why should he care about it. "I'm Selim Bradley. I'm from Amestris. It's on a different world..." He looked down, frowning for a moment, before looking back up, smiling again. "But I'm here to help you guys, and Mr. Elric is here too!"

Luigi, already wearing a mask, stepped into the town. "Wooooah." He said, his mouth hanging open for most of the short walk. "It a-looks like Sammer's Kingdom! I a-went there once, with my brother. It is a long, long story..."

Guilmon gave another glance at the gate before it was fully opened

This gate reminds me of the place Takato used to hide me when he was at school, I was in while we were still on earth, Takato and his friends…

Suddenly, Guilmon's thoughts were interrupted when the gate fully stopped, the noise of the screech of the metal stopping snapped Guilmon back to reality. He looked at the architechture. It looked familiar. He has seen something similar before on earth. Reika's house seemed like some of these house.

Well never mind, I should try to listen to them. He walked with them, paying attention to the conversation. Healing magic? He thought. What is healing magic? I've never heard of healing magic before. He then heard Samurai Jack talking about the plains and the undead.

Risen dead is probably something I can fight against. What is risen dead though? Well if it's like a digimon maybe I'll be able to fight it. He thought.

Good, good, at least I have some kind of use. I'll go with those that fight, I'm not fit to solve diseases.

— Saren frowned behind his helm. He was not going to be rough with the timid pegasus—much. Nonetheless, since the creature had not answered his summons, he would still need to speak with her. And think of what possible use she would have.

"Mr. Elric, hmm?"

Riverrock was rather primitive by his estimate, an example of a city which fit his theory that wide-spread magic-use caused a form of stasis and stagnation. He had little truck with magic-use himself, though he tolerated (sometimes even respected) its practitioners, if they were competent enough. Just thinking about it made him feel a little heavier, as he also remembered Crownguard's chirpy, nigh-insufferable lectures on how techmaturgy was the most ideal fusion of technology and magic (to which Saren often retorted that the results were still primitive and inefficient, but listened nonetheless). Damn this town...

It was as the pegasus piped up about her healing abilities that it hit him. Of course. It had been staring him in the face all the while. —

" Actually, I think you might be of better use in the marshes. Your talent for communication with animals might deter the various Vermin and predators which call those lands home. Your powers of healing would serve as an aid against minor wounds and infection. You will be very safe, trust me."

—Saren's tone was trying to remain matter-of-fact, but edged slowly into that of imperative coaxing. —

Envy had been following the caravan all along, not bothering to engage in any of their conversation. Placing the mask on his face, he continued. While Envy was pretty sure that he could deal with these plague just fine due to his ability to regenerate, but considering that they were practically in another universe he wasn't going to take any chances.

Let's see, there's the plague, the war and the walking dead.

Three challenges. Several challengers. Of course they're aiming to split up. If Envy was forced to actually assist these humans in their predicament, then there must be something for him in return.

Dealing with the plague doesn't sound tempting and so is negotiating with the lizardmen. Discovering the source of the undead rising, on the other hand...

Lyn accepted a mask, and wore it. She wondered of the nature of this enchantment; it was quite different from any that she had witnessed in her travels. Truly, there was much that could still be done with magic.

Riverrock was a magnificent city, with the buildings larger and grander than any she had seen before besides the royal palaces. This had to be an advanced and prosperous city. Maybe there were things she could learn here to bring back to Caelin...

The others started to talk of where to go next, and Lyn chimed in.

"I am going to the plains. I know the pain of the nomads who have had their homes made unsafe, so I wish to help them."

The once dead risen to fight again...she had fought foes like that in the past, but they had been only puppets created through magic. There was a great chance that dark magics were afoot.
