Dreams of Revenge

Grey had spotted the mysterious figure flying among the cloud buildings and through the clouds themselves - he seemed to be a reploid of some sort, although he couldn't help but wonder what a reploid was doing here, of all places, especially since he hadn't seen them before. Such questions were quickly answered as the buildings suddenly plunged earthward, taking whatever innocents were present there with them.

The young reploid was paralysed with shock, his red eyes widening in surprise. Sure, he'd seen some crazy things, but nothing like this - it was befitting of the work of Model W. That immediately made the machine below suspect, a notion reinforced by the utterly bizarre and foreboding effects of the destruction of the buildings. Whatever was causing it, it was absolutely unnatural. The mutterings made Grey snap out of it, but he could do nothing as a literal armada of aircraft and what appeared to be ancient reploids opened fire, tearing apart his allies like so much tissue paper.

Grey's red eyes didn't waver a fraction away from the mysterious machine's own, and his features slowly hardened into a scowl. This guy, whoever he was, had just killed everyone who he was working with, and probably the entire world to boot. He hadn't known them for long, but they were his partners - people who willingly worked alongside him, who actually faced what he faced. That alone made them special, as even when he was working with Aile, the closest person he had to a friend aside from Model A, he was forced to fight his way through Ouroborous alone.

" H-hey, w-what's the big idea?! Who are you?!" Model A's voice shook like a leaf. In his short time of operation he had never seen destruction on such a large scale, even if it was only by proxy.

"Whoever you are, you picked the wrong guy to mess with," spat Grey, his tone brimming with anger, although there was a definite undercurrent of fear - how could he possibly fight something as powerful as this? "I've dealt with worse things than you, and I'm gonna wipe the floor with you and your cronies!"

" G-Grey, what're you talking about? Oh no, don't tell me you've become a Maverick..." replied Model A, his voice actually worse than before. He'd never seen Grey like this before, aside from one time - when it was revealed that Master Albert was the mastermind behind the Maverick attacks all along. His young partner didn't reply, gripping his beamstaff as tightly as he could.

"A-Trans!" yelled Grey, transforming into Aeolus. Pointing both beamsabres at the mysterious machine, he activated his wing and boot jets. "If it's a dogfight you want, then it's a dogfight you'll get! I'll show you the real meaning of strength!"

He was entirely consumed by rage at this point, his thoughts dominated only by one thing: systematically and utterly dismantling the winged reploid and his little fleet of war machines. He'd have his vengeance, or die trying.

The blue entity unfolded its arms, its fingertips sharp as industrial cutting blades. A single index finger, the left, is brought up to point squarely at Grey. The dozens of skyploid soldiers launch themselves at the anguished android, some flanking him. All the while, sunlight shines across their armour, gloriously bright.

Down below, Nanoha's buster appears to have done its job, resulting in a lifeless, white-hot crater surrounded by a burning forest. Then a bellow of anger comes from beneath a calcified formation of fibres. The formation is torn away, to fall apart in fragments, that huge soldier in red power armour shaking its horned helm before looking up to stare hatefully at the mage. More soldiers clomped their way into the light, repeating that soulless gaze. Meanwhile, energy from the crater floats skywards, looking like a meteorite shower in reverse, not to mention vertical. Far above her head, that energy reforms into an ornate circular seal, the language unknown. That seal blazes a light harsher than the sun, pure and hot, but also menacing. Just as this happens, the entities lunge for Nanoha, slicing, hacking, and shooting. —

Nanoha wheeled back. Being up in the air meant that she could gain distance of the creature below quite quickly. There wasn't the smallest scrap of doubt in her mind about what she should do next. There was so much magical energy in the air here, a wealth of it. Plenty of it. Enough to power the most powerful attack in Nanoha was able to use.

She wasn't going to flee if she had a choice against it.

Another, larger, more complex magic circle spread out from under her feet as she titled herself to face downwards again, facing the army of creatures and the armored warrior below. The magic in the air suddenly began to focus... lines of energy began to gather, focusing in front of Nanoha. She swung Raising Heart back, to her side. She had plenty of time before they could reach her.

Plenty of time.

As more and more lines of magic gathered, a new orb of rose magical energy began to gather. And gather. And gather. It grew huge, far larger then Nanoha herself, a seething orb of local magical energy, and magical energy that had been spent during the attacks before. It was all being gathered together... and soon, it would be redirected.

The sphere reached critical mass.

"Starlight"

Nanoha swung Raising Heart forward.

And suddenly found herself in the middle of the massive futuristic library, among the other champions, and without the massive ball of magic she had gathered.

Needless to say, she was confused.

"... Ehhh?"

Cybertron, Doomsday...

Optimus and his group wasted no time in following the other Maximals out through the hole Link had blown in the wall; they had no idea what that creeping field of energy might do if it were to touch them, but given that it was slowly eating away at the chamber in its relentless, howling advance, none of them were particularly eager to find out. The exit Link had created led into a narrow, zigzagging passageway which meandered on ahead for quite some distance; the ceiling here was particularly high and the walls grew farther apart the higher they got, thereby allowing Nighscream to have some reasonable elbow room as he flew after the others; the crackling field crept down the passageway in pursuit, gradually drawing closer to the fleeing Maximals despite their best efforts to evade it.

The tremors continued to wrack the Cybertronian underworld, growing ever more intense with every passing second, and rocks and masonry began to plummet from the ceiling as the world slowly shook itself apart.

One large boulder clipped Nightscream, knocking the technorganic bat out of the air with a pained gasp; he tumbled to the floor and lay there in a daze, unable to get his bearings as the destructive field crept towards him like a harbinger of impending doom. Noting his companion's distress, Cheetor skidded to a halt and turned to go after Nightscream; alas, his efforts were too little, too late.

The field grazed the edge of Nightscream's foot and the young Maximal immediately snapped out of his daze, throwing back his head, eyes open to their very limits, as he let out an ear-splitting scream of utter agony. The youth's body lost all colour then, turning a uniform shade of grey as his features blurred until he existed only as a pallid silhouette. Then he was gone altogether, subsumed by the creeping field of annihilation.

A look of horror and disbelief had spread across Cheetor's face as Nightscream died, and his mouth had begun to open in a shout of denial; but as soon as the bat's agonized remains faded away, his grief turned into confusion and Cheetor shook his head, as if to clear the cobwebs from his cerebral processor.

Optimus glanced over his shoulder at his spotted second-in-command, slowing down somewhat. "Cheetor, we can't stop; what's wrong?"

The feline Maximal blinked once, then turned around and began to run once more.

"...I just had the strangest," he began, but then shook his head again. "No, it's nothing."

On the surface, Sky Shadow stared at the rapidly-encroaching wall of doom in alarm. This was not something he could comprehend, not something he could fight; and in the face of such a world-sundering anomaly, his only option was to flee.

"Sky Shadow, ventillate!" he rasped, transforming rapidly into his jet mode and taking into the air with all haste; he poured every last erg of power into his thrusters and engines, hoping to get as far away from this creeping ruin as was humanly possible—he did not care where he went, so long as it was not there.

Pillager, meanwhile, would discover that the wall of energy had spread to the fortress throne of Cybertron's current dictator; its all-devouring expanse greedily ate up Megatron's citadel, washing across it in a deadly tide of crackling, howling white.

The annihilation wave roared after Necrosis, literally tearing up the street behind him in hot pursuit.

The Hero of Light - turned - wolf blinked twice at the sudden scream, piercing through the endless crash of stone on ground before fading away.

That... was that... Nightscream? No. He looked around, eyes wide, almost turning back for a second to run back into the void - then he stopped, before turning around and leaping forwards, resuming his dash along the passageway. He's gone. It's too late...

Why were none of the other Maximals reacting to this? It was like - like he had never existed...

Was this some sort of erasure? Not just from life, but from living memory itself? A shudder shook him, and he coughed violently, trying to remove the feeling of sheer horror that had hit him even as he ran.

This wall did not merely bring death. It brought closure. Those whom it consumed would never be remembered, would disappear in a thrice from existence... It was a Fate Worse than Death... a fate they would suffer if...

No.

"Faster! Run faster!!!" he cried, almost screaming in his terror.

He kept running, eyes wide and chest heaving in horror, paws hitting the ground in an erratic, terrified lope. They had to run. Run, run, run to escape the darkness, the wall of death... of a fate beyond death...

All around them, the world continued to fall.

Nanoha lowered Raising Heart. She was at a loss as to what had just happened. Suddenly appearing in a vast, technologically impressive library in the middle of casting Starlight Breaker was quite an unexpected and downright bizarre experience. She looked left, then right, holding Raising Heart close to herself.

"Um... what just happened?" she asked.

"But... there were those things... I was going to stop them!" Nanoha protested, looking back at the spot where the portal she'd been pulled through had most recently existed. After a few moments of silence, she looked down at the ground. She'd been stopped from defeating those... whatever those were. But next time she met them, she would stop them. For sure.

Realising it would probably be a good idea, Erio activated Strada, summoning his Barrier Jacket. Why he hadn't before was question he hadn't figured out the answer to just yet. The Library carried an extreme sense of foreboding on the air; even if these "Vashta Nerada" weren't hiding in the shadows waiting to skin everyone alive, something was definitely waiting in the halls.

Nanoha looked behind herself. There was only one, as usual. What did 'count your shadows' even mean? She shook her head, pigtails shaking.

"I only have one," she said, looking back up at the Doctor. She dismissed her barrier jacket and put Raising Heart back in standby mode, leaving her with a red orb necklace and in pajamas once more.

Bowser had kept quiet the entire time, from when he arrived at the castle, to where everyone is currently, which seemed to be a giant library.

He was currently wondering if he would be able to put one of his castles in here. It was certainly big enough.

He also checked his shadow. Just his and only his.

Here he was, at the end of a world, facing down the largest force of mechaniloids, aircraft, and reploids he had ever seen. Yet strangely, Grey didn't feel as terrified as he was sure he would. In fact, he felt downright hot blooded. He wouldn't die here. He wouldn't let them get the better of him. He would avenge everybody, and somehow he would try to restore the world. Jetting upward with a small burst of speed in an attempt to get above his assailants, he crossed his beamsabres together.

Swinging both of them away from his body, he created two tornadoes that were both crackling with electricity. One of them soared upward, where it was unlikely to hit anything unless one of the Skyroids was stupid enough to fly in front of it, but the other descended rapidly, where it would hopefully either strike some of the reploids or perhaps even hit the head honcho. If it did connect with any of the machines, it would likely stun them as a burst of electrical energy flooded through them. Of course, there was no guarantee that it would work.

" Grey, talk to me!" said Model A, louder this time.

"Model A, be quiet - I'm going to take these guys down," replied Grey bluntly. He wasn't really in the mood for chatting, and it looked like his opponents weren't, either. Aside from their leader, it appeared that they favoured quantity over quality, so if he could hold out long enough he could probably come out the other end fine, but he couldn't afford to take too many hits either.

Bring it on.

His thoughts were rudely interrupted as the reploid suddenly felt himself being sucked into something. Trying his best to escape it, Grey found it was no use, no matter how often or how long he tried to air dash. Soon he was swallowed by a portal, the last remnant of the reploid's presence in the world of Xanth being the pinkish tip of a beamsabre.

Another portal opened up in the Librarium, spitting out a dishevelled and confused looking Grey next to everyone else. Confusion slowly gave way to impotent anger as he realised that he was no longer in Xanth, and thus he had no way to affect whatever events were to come there. He wanted to scream until his throat was raw, or just take his rage out on the nearest inanimate object. But he couldn't do any of these things, at least not with everyone else there, so he settled for merely looking at the floor in a defeated manner, his body slumping forward as he settled on his knees.

I could have saved them...

" Damn it, " he muttered darkly, transforming back to his normal, non-megamerged state.

For once in his life he had actually failed at protecting people. It was a new and unpleasant sensation, one which he had no desire to repeat. He wouldn't let it happen again, and if that reploid showed up then he'd turn it into scrap.

Garland had no idea what The Doctor was on about. Just in case, he checked his shadow like everyone else. As usual, he had one, just like everyone else. Perhaps The Doctor knew what he was doing, but Rey seemed confident that he was mistaken.

In any case, the library that the portal had taken them to was indeed an impressive place. Garland had read little over the years, even during his time as a knight, but he was well aware of how effective writing could be when effectively wielded. He wondered who could have the time, let alone resources, to amass a collection like that, although the purpose was obvious. It was the same purpose as every other library.

For now, he decided to remain silent and wait for something to happen.

Tyrell looked back to see if everyone was still following him and Link. It seemed like the giant bat was the only one that had died so far, which was good. But unless they found some means of escape it was only a matter of time before they all shared his fate.
