So that it doesn't look like a cut/locked page after you move a page from the main namespace. After all, locking them makes things weird for inbound. Something like:

Oh my, it seems you've come to a page that used to hold a work, if you'll check at the top of the page, you'll see links to the proper Namespace where the work resides. If you own the site that brought you here, please change the link.

Couldn't you just leave a redirect or a disambiguation page? I'm not sure why you would cut it, even if there are no wicks. We're not supposed to cut them because of inbounds, I thought.

If there are inbounds the old Main should be made into a redirect. If there aren't, there's no need for a pointer page. If there is or could be a name collision (with either another workor a trope) the Main page should be a dismabiguation.

I like making the main page a redirect or disambiguation even when there are no inbounds, simply to prevent someone from mistakenly adding a duplicate work page in the Main namespace because they thought we didn't have that work yet.

If we're not supposed to do that, though, then a special type of page like Deboss was suggesting would serve the same purpose.

Maddy, you said you didn't think we should turn old names into redirects because we want to discourage people from not putting the correct Namespace on a work entry. Do you no longer feel that way? Because, that's why I suggested this.

I said if there are any inbounds, the Main should be a redirect. If you're making a new works page, or moving one with no inbounds, it shouldn't

Well, that I knew. I thought that popped in relation to moving a page.
