The thematic connection between the two is that I, a common person unfamiliar with either source material, frequently confuse All Might and Might Guy in conversations and half the time mistake them for being the same dude.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I enjoy My Hero for:
- its colorful supporting cast
- portrayal of a superhero society without being as dull as Tiger And Bunny or as perverted A Certain Magical Index
- Chris Sabat voicing All Might
- the three-way rivalry between Todoroki, Bakugo, and Izuku
- the variety of super powers and odd quirks to them (split guy is cool, Stain's blood powers are cool, All Might's superhuman brickiness and themed punches are cool)
- all of the Inko Midoriya fanart
- the nuance of Deku figuring out how to better utilize his abilities rather than just unlocking some new transformation every season
- the entirety of the fight between Izuku's class and Mirio Togata the naked, teleporting high school Chad
- putting a largely western concept (caped vigilantes) into a Japanese setting. Kind of like Pacific Rim it's just neat to see.
However:
- I dislike the main character and don't find his narration or growth interesting - the message of "being a hero means not being a Jerkass" is laid on too thickly in the first 2 seasons.
- Most of the plot was ruined for me by Deku saying "this is how I became the world's greatest hero" in the first episode
- Don't like most of the villains so far - the jailbait knife-twirling Harley Quinn knockoff, the edgy evil hand guy, or his Darth Vader wannabe foster dad, or Stain, whose No True Scotsman approach to villainy is downright comical.
- Unpopular opinion: All Might vs All for One was not a great fight, nor did it convey the same intensity of All Might fighting Noumu in Season 1. I still rewatch that fight to this day.
- Bakugo's development into Teeth-Clenched Teamwork with Izuku takes far too long and drags the character down. It's typical for anime characters to have their personality traits exaggerated for comical effect, but seeing Bakugo lose his stack so frequently makes one question how he actually functions in daily life.
-smooths back hair, fixes tie-
I like Naruto, but saying what I dislike about it would require a short essay on all of its problems. See the Naruto thread for a synopsis. Part 1 is genuinely good shonen that everyone should watch (minus the filler). Part 2 turns into Dragonball with ninjas and Pokemon.
It literally feels like they took two franchises that I love and hate in equal measure and opted to make them fight.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!I appreciate My Hero for being a shonen Anime where people actually work (hard) for their achievements. Sure it has its "some people have better quirks than others", but I appreciate Deku for being a character that never takes what he has for granted and constantly works hard for every little achievement he gets.
I'm torn on whether or not I should watch this season finale. I have yet to get back to finishing Naruto (stopped just as the entire Shinobi army is about to gang up on Madara after beating Obito), and haven't properly gotten into MHA either.

No love for Bakugo's mom? She seems to be getting a lot of positive attention ever since her visual debut simultaneously cemented her being very vocally opposed to her son's typical behavior around others (one wonders if she ever specifically learned about him bullying Izuku; lots of fan art/comics and doujinshi have her piss off her son by doting on the poor kid).

To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.I mean don't get me wrong
Madara Uchiha makes Part 2 worth it - he's downright Blood Knight and gets visibly excited at the idea of fighting his old foe again. He kicks the crap out of an entire army of veteran ninja. He is absolutely what I enjoy about a final boss - Screw My Evil Plan I'm Having Too Much Fun Kicking The Sh-t Out Of You.
One could argue there's deeper symbolism in each of the giant Pokemon that show up later, and that the series would have naturally evolved to giant beasts fighting each other and demon trees showing up. And if you've been following it since the beginning there's a long-awaited "EVERYONE IS HERE" that's emotionally satisfying the first time you read it.
It's just.
You go from awesome, tactical fights where every concept is new and the pacing is great, to fights where a lot of the time it's like "what new ability will suddenly turn up next?"
Also, they drop Madara for some new a-hole and the number of times the story shifts final bosses feels asinine.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Like slimcoder said, that fight from the movie was 18-year old All Might, he's still figuring out how to do things.
To find a decent grasp of what he was like in his prime, a few comments have been made (in the Anime, at least. I'm not up to speed with the Manga) that could help: like when All Might mentions that it takes him 300 punches to defeat a foe, when he would've only needed 5 in his heyday. Or when it takes him 30 seconds to travel 6 kilometres (some of those seconds were spent fighting monsters and checking up on his allies before jumping off), and another character mentions that this is still way too slow compared to his prime.
All Might says it would take 5 hits, but he was specifically talking out of his ass specifically in that scenario to make the villains flee before he runs out of power. Even if you can mathematically quantify how much force All Might used in each hit he used on Noumu, are we really dividing that by 5 and using that to say "prime All Might hits with x amount of force each time, if what his older self said is true? Are we taking him at his word in a situation where he was specifically rolling an Intimidation check?
(god this fight is so much better than All for One)
Furthermore I would doubt anyone who "estimates" exactly how many hits it would take for them to knock a person out, let alone a superhuman monster.
It means he's weaker, yes, but is that a strong argument for "All Might would definitely be capable of this? Unless there's more to go on in the manga - movie All Might is the most detailed depiction of "healthy All Might" that we currently have.
Otherwise
- "he did this when he had super-tuberculosis, but he allegedly was x times stronger/faster in his prime."
- wait, Guy shouldn't have won because if they properly scaled All Might to statement X, Y, and Z then All Might should be a plus ultra multi-continent buster!"

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!
Eh, at that point the Nomu is by far the most dangerous enemy there, and All Might doesn't really do subtlety all that well. That said, the difference between 5 and 300 blows in that scenario isn't a lot; if Might Guy gets assessed a mere 1000 times more powerful than current All Might, then prime All Might doesn't have a chance (and this is Death Battle, where a 1000 times factor between competitors really is small.)
Yeah, both All Might vs Nōmu and All Might vs All For One are pretty good fights.
Look if I wanted to watch two old men with heart conditions beat the sh-t out of each other I can watch this fight from The Boondocks worst season...
...and deal with less Narm, fewer flashbacks, and bystander reactions interrupting the fight. AM vs AFO represents a good chunk of what I dislike about shonen anime fight sequences. The only thing I like about it was the Ironic Echo when All For One went "I am here."
And I don't like "United States of Smash." It's a mouthful and too ridiculous-sounding for the moment it's being used in. note If anyone likes the fight that's fine. I do not. This is my last statement on it.
And why would a Japanese superhero name his finishing move after another country anyway? Imagine Spider Man shooting his webs and going, "NAGASAKI" or "SHIBUYA!" Imagine if Superman went for a big punch and went "BERLIN WALL" or "DUSSELDORF BARRAGE" or "MOSCOW HAYMAKER."

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!
I mean he clearly modeled his superhero persona after western superheroes in the first place, it's not like he goes around punching people dressed in full samurai gear.
Wonder how the Protagonist of UA:LA would do in one of these.

You are not alone.Oh, no. He doesn't like aspects of a show.
He's already said his part about things about the show he does like so it's not as though he has nothing but unvarnished hate for it. (And who has nothing but unadulterated love for a piece of media with no complaints about it at all?)
He's not fond of parts of it, whatever.

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.United States of Smash didn’t bother me because I’m used to people appending things to the end of United States like the United States of Whatever
