Carnage is pretty fun nowadays.

Compared to the 90’s where he was pure edge & Maxium Carnage went on for way too long he’s comfortably settled into wackjob murderor.

Depraved as all fuck but he’s amusing about it all the same.

@Soble I feel like you tried to dissagree with me when we actually happen to agree on most things. If I have to reatirate, I'm not defending quality of Elfen Lied or Lucy as a character - I'm bewildered, why of all the legitimate reasons to critisize Elfen Lied, anime edginess is the only problem brought up. It's not even a valid reason. Claiming that it's too over the top to be believable is blatantly untrue or has everone forgotten about atrocities comitted by Imperial Japan, Nazi Germany, Soviet Union, Atlantic and Arabic slave trade or innumerable other crimes committed through out history. Someone from the first world questioning realism of darkness and grit is like someone in a boat drifting through Pacific questioning existance of water.

If I had to guess, it's a culture thing. There is that subculture (emo and whatever else there is) which is simply okay to mock and sideline. Linkin Park is good example - it took lead vocalist killing himself for many people to even consider that band singing about things like depression migh, you know, know something about it. It didn't take me much effort to figure it out, but maybe I shouldn't hold others by the same standards as kindergardener who doesn't even understand English lyrics.

And there is no way Carnage is unknown. Less known than Venom, but still and A lister.

Welp, that was my rant. Now to wash it all away with some positivity: despite its gratuitous edge, Elfen Lied has Nana. She made reading the series worthwhile. Nana is the best.

Really, Elfen Lied falls well within it's own genre. It comes from the same vein as Devilman and the like. Elfen Lied was popular for a time and now rests as an old shame for many viewers.

Well when I call it edgy I don’t mean that’s it’s only problem.

It’s just a more general insult. I can think of other stuff to criticize it for but edgy is what came to mind at the moment.

[up] When something is popular solely due to shock material with nothing else to stand on it will fade quickly.

Elfen Lied isn't even good edge. Say what you will about Carnage, but at least he had a wicked design, a fun personality, and a kickass theme song. Even back in the 90's he still had that cheese and 8th grade charm emblematic of that era.

I feel if ya want to make something sympathetic ya shouldn’t make them homicidally insane.

I mean, it certainly can, but Elfen Lied tried way too hard to make you feel sorry for them by basically forcing you to feel bad for them rather letting the audience decide for themselves.

I know nothing about Elfen Lied - and what I've heard doesn't make it super interesting to me - but I dislike Carnage as well. For one he used to be super-overexposed in the bad old days and secondly there's nothing interesting or fun about his character. It's what someone said a few pages back, he just wants to see people bleed.

There's actually very little you can do with that. His backstory is also way over the top to the point of being trite. There's no twist or irony or anything. He's basically like the Joker (another character that suffers from a lot of the same problems) - kills loads of people and seemingly can't be permanently killed or depowered - but at least the Joker used to have some style. Carnage is basically "cut-my-face-off" Joker all the time.

Well that's a bit untrue that there's nothing new or fun that could be done with him.

The Carnage Axis series for one was acclaimed for having a particularly fun take on what if he became a good guy after having his morality reversed.

And the Joker comparison is amusing because as mentioned pages back the two hate each other for having different styles on crime.

Honestly, Accelerator would have made for a better opponent for Lucy. They have far similar powers and backstories.

Accelerator, since his actual power and use of it would shut down Lucy's pretty easily. I'm assuming faso has a passing familiarity with the Index series, otherwise he wouldn't have responded like that.

Accelerator is literally one of the most overpowered characters in existance. This is extremely common knowledge.

Even though he’s currently crippled & needs a crutch to walk he’s still largely unstoppable.

If Lucy were to fight him she would get stomped like a cockroach.

Even then any connection the two have is pretty tenuous.

For one he used to be super-overexposed in the bad old days and secondly there's nothing interesting or fun about his character. It's what someone said a few pages back, he just wants to see people bleed.

There can be beauty in simplicity. In a genre where it seems like every other villain is a genius master planner with million contingency plans for how to enact their ultimate world-changing agenda, Carnage is just a dude with powers who wants to stab some folk and is really f*cking hard to beat.

That can be a breath of fresh air after reading 86 issues of Doctor Doom's ultimate master plan competing with Magneto's ultimate master plan to see which one will outpace Thanos's ultimate master plan and turn the entire universe into tang.

Carnage doesn't have a plan. He doesn't even really have a goal. He just has a hobby. He has a passion for the action that would, for any other villain, be a means to achieving their ultimate end goal. For Carnage, there is no goal. The violence is the goal in and of itself, no agendas or plans required.

He's a walking Indy Ploy, a trope that is commonly reserved for heroes because villains are expected to be genius strategists who've calculated all of the variables ahead of time. And he's one whose villainous purpose is so f*cking simple that he's carrying it out while you're fighting him.

Basically, Kasady has no idea what the f*ck he's doing and it's kind of endearing in a dark and ugly way. He's a lot like Spider-Man in the sense that he punches in a weight class way above his mindset courtesy of his superpowers. He's an extremely dangerous and powerful figure who thinks and operates like a street-level villain. A serial killer the likes of which might battle DareDevil or the Punisher were he not far out of their league.

He just goes out there with a mission statement of "stab some folk" and way more power than he needs to do it. He's like Thanos robbing banks or the Abomination mugging people in alleyways. It's a fun juxtaposition; incredible power, immense villainous potential, and all he wants to do with it is shank people for lulz.

He's the kind of character that has absolutely no right being this f*cking threatening compared to the other shit superheroes have to deal with, but is. And he has so much fun doing it.

The Wrecking Crew have a similar appeal, being Asgardian-level villains who act as hired street thugs.

I do tend to imagine Carnage doing a funny dance where he hops on both legs with his arms stretched in the air clapping with a big-ass grin on his face laughing.

I can see him doing that in canon. tongue

....... Huh now I’m thinking who the fuck can fight Accelerator?

I do tend to imagine Carnage doing a funny dance where he hops on both legs with his arms stretched in the air clapping with a big-ass grin on his face laughing.

Which is, itself, another part of his appeal. He's just having so much fun all the time. He never takes himself seriously. He's just thrilled to be here. He is the happiest edgelord ever to lord an edge. This creates an interesting juxtaposition with the sheer scale of his actions.

Remember in Black Panther when Klaw was giggling like a schoolgirl over how cool firing off his arm-cannon was just then? Imagine that kind of behavior as Thanos is wading over the field of broken heroes in Infinity War. "Did you see that?! I just threw that guy like three hundred feet! Wasn't that—oh, you're not on my side. My bad. SMASH!"

He's a creature of pure impulse and gleeful catharsis, doing things because they just seemed like a fun idea at the time. While also being powerful enough to make those impulses extremely dangerous. "Hey, what would happen if my symbiote ate a bunch of cattle all at once? LET'S FIND OUT."
