The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That and if memory serves there were also concerns that she was too friendly with some House Republicans to the point of not supporting Democratic challengers to said House Republicans.

Huh, I must've completely missed that.

More reason to dislike her.

That is accurate, actually. Wasserman-Schultz was woefully bad at her job but the way some have made her intop the ultimate foe of Democracy is just a bit silly. She was incompetent as all hell, but her job isn't that important.

[up]Sure she wasn't the ultimate foe of democracy but she was a liar who tried her best to make internal divisions worse and ran the Democratic Party incredibly poorly. Both of which directly benefit Republicans and their reactionary ilk, thus she was a rather bad person.

Cynically one might wonder if she gets focused hate not only because of her actual screwups but also because she's a woman.

[up]I mean... maybe? Our society has deep undercurrents of sexism so that probably had some impact, but she was a legitimately terrible person.

she's terrible, but there's no doubt that her being a woman of color means more people are likely to scrutinize her. (though not enough to stop the hillary hate train)

Schultz is not a woman of colour, just a woman.

Then again, a person can get flak for both good and bad reasons.

A lot of people blame DWS for screwing over Bernie from his rightful title and certain factions of the far left have not exactly been great with women to put it mildly.

lso, Ocasio Cortez and Bernie Sanders are leaping into the Kansas-03 race to support...a guy from Iowa who has barely lived in the district against a more progressive, lesbian Native American woman fighting to be the first Native American woman elected to congress. The optics here are freaking awful.

But, as mentioned by other posters, there's a lot to give her genuine flak over regarding her "leadership" of the DNC. I only put the Scare Quotes there because she was reportedly that abysmal at it.

In more recent news, the Albany County Democratic Headquarters had nine shots fired into it this past Tuesday, though thankfully it was after hours so no one was present.

What's the reason for supporting the guy? Just being against "identity politics"?

Given past behavior it's more than plausible that he's willing to play sycophant to Sander and that's enough to establish his progressive credentials in their eyes.

It really seems that's the only reason. Welder was a Sanders delegate and that's it.

And no denying DWS was awful at her job. But some have overstated just how important her job really was.

I'd say Sanders is simply retributing a favor for someone who supported his candidacy before, not something to get so worked up about, Cortez having also been a part of said campaign.

[up][up]Um... if we're fine with patronage style politics devoid of actual ideals then what you're saying makes sense. But considering that they're backing a less progressive candidate against a more progressive minority I think that is at-best just incredibly bad optics. At-worst it's actively unprincipled.

Alternatively, the fact that people who work together tend to support each other as that's how support networks in politics are built? I mean, yeah, bad optics and all, but some of this is how politics tends to work; you put your support behind people who you've worked with or have supported you. Especially in primaries? Is this a primary? It would help if you gave us links to info instead of just assuming we already had it.

Food for thought: what do you think of a rule for Congress where if a majority of the Reps/Senators co-sponsor a bill they could over ride the speaker/majority leader?

[up][up][up]Yes that is generally true but it doesn't mean that "we owe them a favor" excuses much of anything, and it especially doesn't when Sanders is described as some beacon of progressivism in human form. So my original point stands.
