Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Midterms tend to hurt the incumbent, and this applies to both parties. So it would be a mistake to assume that Republican turnout can never be depressed, they may have general high loyalty but that's not the same thing as reliably voting in midterms.
Still ultimately you're right that what matters is whether or not Democrats vote, and signs are suggesting that they will.

We're even more dead now, aren't we?
And my very first thought is to wonder whether that Chinese company that's making the Trump 2020 flags will keep doing it or walk away.

Is that supposed to be surprising? They're right wing hawks, that's pretty much mainstream positions amongst their group.
Russia loving pseudoisolationism only really infects the Trumpist part of the Right.
Hmm, excellent

Mildly surprising, if only because Trump and Trumism have taken over the Republican party so very thoroughly.

While this is not necessarily a bad point it's worth noting that they aren't the Republican party, they're a influential right-wing think-tank. Thus it makes sense they'd stay truer to traditional Conservative orthodoxy.
Looks like that pro-life Roe v. Wade film is getting even better. According to the Daily Beast, the film makers have been losing cast and crew because they've been misrepresenting the film, under the code name of "1974" and whitewashing the synopsis in order to get people on board, and they are seemingly casting Milo Yiannopoulos and Tomi Lahren as one-scene cameos.
Why 1974? are they making a 1984 prequel, claiming that Abortion laws somehow lead to Big Brother? Or is it just the year that Roe v. Wade's ruling was made?
Among the best arguments the Republican party cares nothing for pro-life save as a magic trick to distract people from their corruption and power plays. Those people have nothing to do with the issue or its questions.
Which is a shame because Roe versus Wade is a dramatically interesting story regardless (and because of) the horrifying consequences the conflict over the ruling has had.
Then again, I remember the movie on Stonewall where they cast the whitest most straight appealing actor they could find to lead all the black and queerer people. Hollywood can't tell dramatically interesting stories about controversial subjects anymore.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. What I find amazing is that both Steven Baldwin and Kevin Sorbo - both pretty damn conservative - backed out when they first looked at the script.
What did they see?
Oh God! Natural light!Kevin Sorbo is incredibly self absorbed and a pain in the ass on Beiber-esque levels even when not The Fundamentalist but not actually evil.
Knowing Milo is the kind of guy they want to endorse this movie, I'm not at all surprised he backed out.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Something even better. Facebook post of a naturalized citizen being told by Tennessee's election site she was not a citizen when trying to update her information to vote in the upcoming primary, and this happened to six other Tennessean naturalized citizens.

Oh wait, no it isn't.

Though I'm not confident in Republicans sitting out elections, if that 59% translates into significantly higher turnout, Dems will be handed midterms regardless.
i'm tired, my friend
